There are four types of Kumbh Mela.
Kumbh, Ardh Kumbh, Purna Kumbh and Mahakumbh. All the Kumbh Melas are organized according to the planetary position. The time of the year is also very important in organizing the Kumbh Mela. Each Kumbh Mela has its own special significance.

Mahakumbh
Mahakumbh will be held in Prayagraj next year i.e. 2025. It will begin on January 13 and end on February 26. The last Mahakumbh was held in Prayagraj in 2013. After 12 years, Prayagraj is again hosting the Kumbh Mela.

Kumbhamela
The Kumbh Mela is held at Haridwar, Nashik and Ujjain apart from Prayagraj. The fair is held at an interval of 12 years. The four places are chosen alternately. During this time, devotees bathe in the Ganges, Kshipra, Godavari and Sangam (the meeting place of three rivers).

Unlike the Kumbh Mela, the Ardh Kumbh is celebrated every six years. Ardh Kumbh is held at only two places, Prayagraj and Haridwar. Half means half. That is why it is held after six years.

Mahakumbh
The Kumbh Mela which is held after every 144 years is called Mahakumbh. It is held only in Prayagraj. Because this Kumbh Mela comes after many years and therefore it holds special importance. Mahakumbh takes place after the 12th Purnima.

How is the location decided?
The place where the Kumbh Mela will be held is decided on the basis of astrological calculations. the astrologers and the heads of the akharas come together and decide the place where the Kumbh Mela will be held. they observe the position of the major planets of Hindu astrology – Brihaspati and Surya – to arrive at the decision. .
