Story of Shri Trivishtapeshwar Mahadev
This temple of Mahadev is situated in a small cave on the right side behind the Omkareshwar temple of Ujjain.
One Mahadev who is counted in 84 Mahadev Yatra is Shri Trivishtapeshwar Mahadev (Trivishtapeshwar Mahadev Katha). According to the stories, this Shivalinga of Mahadev has been established by the gods themselves. Their story is like this that once Devrishi Narad reached the court of Indra while travelling.
On the arrival of Devrishi in Indra Lok, Indra respected him properly and asked about the greatness of Mahakal Van – then Narada Muni told that Mahakal Van is as virtuous as all the pilgrimages and staying here is like staying on Kailash because here God is there. Shiva resides with his devotees. That is why due to his image, about sixty thousand Shivlingas are secretly present in the Mahakal forest. Nine crore Shaktis reside in this forest only to maintain harmony in the powers of these Lingas.
Devraj is established in his form as the only power for the entire world, but the presence of nine crore powers at this place shows the importance and spirituality of this forest. Devotion to every Shivalinga in this forest provides strength and liberation.
Knowing the importance of the forest, Indra along with all the gods visits Mahakaal forest and finds this forest as beautiful and spiritual as Vishnu and Brahmaloka. Due to all the Lingas being secret, they could not see the Lingas due to which the Gods started getting disappointed, then Devrishi gave them the idea of establishing a Shivalinga for themselves, which the Gods happily accepted and established a Shivalinga at the same place. Name was kept as Trivishtapeshwar Mahadev Ujjain. This Linga is established in the east from Karkotak and in the south from Mahamaya. By worshiping the deities in a proper manner, they earned virtuous benefits.
Trivishtapeshwar Mahadev Mandir, one of the 84 Mahadevs in Ujjain, is located behind the Shri Omkareshwar Temple enshrined in the Mahakal Temple of Ujjain. Devotees come here throughout the year to have darshan and wish for their wishes to be fulfilled, but it is said that the person who worships here on the day of Ashtami, Chaturdashi and Sankranti gets special results in the next world.
