Vijayalakshmi Temple
Vijayalakshmi Temple is a Lakshmi temple situated at the base of Rushyamuka hill near Gangavati in Karnataka.To the temple’s south flows river Tungabhadra in curvy path.
Vijaya Lakshmi or Jaya Lakshmi (Victorious Lakshmi) is also a manifestation drawn from Durga. She is form of the goddess who bestows victory,not only in battles, but also for conquering hurdles in order to achieve success.
She is depicted as eight-armed, dressed in blue garments, carrying the chakra, shankha, sword, shield, lotus, pasha, and other two hands expressing the abhaya mudra and the varada mudra.
It is said that Vidyaranya installed the idol of Vijayalaksmi in this temple. Vidyaranya was Guru to Hakka and Bukka the founders of Vijayanagara Empire.
The temple is ancient but layers of lime conceal it’s age.
Right besides Sri Vijayalakshmi Devastana is Pampa Sarovara. The pond has reference in Ramayana. It is said that Rama and Lakshmana took bath in this pond during their Vanavasa, the 13 year exile. Hence Pampa Sarovara is considered as one of the holiest ponds in India.
