Wat Tomo Laos

Share

It’s a forest of ancient trees with Khmer ruins in the middle.

The best way to reach Vat Tomo is from the Champasak side as the little path going along the Mekong river after Vat Muang Kang is very enjoyable by walk or mountain bike. A boat do the crossing for 50.000kip/person and will drop you at the village near Tomo.
You can arrange a time to come back (at least 2h) or if you are in bicycle you can make a loop around Champasak by going back to the small path along the Mekong and heading North. 35km ride which will definitely fill up the soul of people on a spiritual path.

Temple that is hidden quite far into the forest. Entering the forest, there is a faint smooth dirt path that would lead you to the temple ruins itself. When arriving there can see old stones scattered on some places on the floor. Many old artifacts and stone statues were there. This place felt like walking inside of a labyrinth. Another building colored in white was a place of warship with a sign reading of a folklore of the temple.

Wat Tomo is part of the Wat Phu complex of temples, but located around two kilometres away from the main temple grounds. It is an ancient Khmer Temple that pre-dates Angkor Wat. This two tier temple is hidden in the jungle that lines the Mekong, shaded by tall trees. Within the temple you will find a number of structures in various states of disrepair and a number of Khmer religious sculptures depicting Hindu Gods. Visitors to Wat Tomo will find it mostly abandoned and can explore the moss covered ruins at their leisure.
