What is the pot tied on Shivling called? When and why is it tied?

Share

Many times we see a pot tied over the Shivalinga, from which drop by drop water keeps falling on the Shivalinga. This scene is often seen during summer. There are many things related to this tradition, about which it is very important to know.

These days the month of Vaishakh is going on, which will last till May 5. In this month, there is a tradition of tying a pot filled with water on the Shivalinga. Drop by drop water keeps falling on Shivalinga from this pot. Why is this done only in the month of Vaishakh and what is the importance of this tradition. Many stories and beliefs related to this are prevalent in our society. Today we are telling you special things related to this tradition, which are as follows…

What is this pot called?
The pot filled with water which is tied on top of Shivalinga is called Galantika. The literal meaning of Galantika is a vessel or vessel for drinking water. This pot has a small hole at the bottom from which one drop of water continuously falls on the Shivalinga. This pot can also be made of clay or any other metal. Special care is taken that the water in this pot does not run out.

What is the story related to this tradition?

According to religious texts, when the ocean was churned, first of all a terrible poison named Kalakoot came out, which created havoc in the world. Then Lord Shiva took that poison around his neck. According to beliefs, in the month of Vaishakh, when there is extreme heat, the temperature of Lord Shiva’s body starts increasing due to Kalkoot poison. To control that temperature, Galantika is tied on Shivling. The water dripping drop by drop provides coolness to Lord Shiva.

This is how the tradition of offering water to Lord Shiva started?

People offer water to Shivalinga every day. The reason behind this is that Lord Shiva’s body temperature should remain normal. During summers the temperature remains high, hence at this time Galantika is tied so that the stream of water continuously falls on the Shivalinga.
Pay special attention to this

In the month of Vaisakh, Galantika is tied on the Shivalinga in almost every temple. In this tradition, one thing to be kept in mind is that the water poured into the Galantika should be completely pure. Since this water falls on Shivalinga, it is important for it to be pure. If water taken from an impure source is poured into the drain, one may face problems in the future.
Therefore, it is important to take care of cleanliness and purity.
