When did the singing of Geet Govind start in Shri Jagannath Temple?
In Orissa, a brinjal seller had a daughter. From the world’s point of view there was no goodness in him. There was neither wealth nor beauty.
But that girl, who was insignificant from the world’s point of view, was very fond of Saint Jaydev Goswami’s verse song Govindam. She kept humming it day and night and kept falling in love with God.
She would do all the household work, serve her parents, and hum Jaidev ji’s verses throughout the day and remain engrossed in the remembrance of God.
It was a full moon night, father woke up the lovely girl and ordered that daughter! There is still moonlight, pluck brinjals in this light so that I can sell them in the morning. She slept humming and woke up humming. He was enjoying this humming on waking up.
She started plucking brinjals humming, sometimes going here, sometimes there; Because the brinjal had to be plucked selectively.
At that time, on one hand, love was oozing from every pore of her and on the other hand, the melodious songs of Geet Govind were emanating from her throat.
God in the form of love would sometimes come here and sometimes go there behind him. In this affair, his Pitambara was getting entangled in the brinjal thorns, but neither Bala nor the loving Lord who was running behind her was aware of it.
The world came to know about this secret when the door of Lord Jagannath opened in the morning and the king of that country went to see the tableau of the Lord as soon as the door opened. He was very sad to see that the priest had not worn the new Pitambara, which he had given in the evening, to the Lord. They understood that the priest had kept the new Pitambar and had given the old Pitambar to God. He asked the priest about this.
The poor priest was speechless after seeing this scene. He had dressed the Lord in the new Pitambara given by the king, but the king suspected the priest’s intentions and put him in jail.
The innocent priest started crying bitterly in the name of God in the jail.
In the meantime the king took some rest and fell asleep. In his dream he saw Lord Jagannath and heard that the priest is innocent, leave him with respect. As far as the matter of new pitambar is concerned, go to the brinjal field and see this fact for yourself, you will find torn pieces of pitambar entangled in the thorns of brinjal.
I am under love, I keep circling behind my lovers. I ran after the girl who plucked brinjals to listen to her loving songs and in the process, my womb got entangled in the thorns and burst.
This wonderful incident filled the life of the king who made all the arrangements for the maintenance of the Jagannath temple, the offering of food, aarti etc. and he also started to remain engrossed in the love of God. God kept following a girl plucking brinjal out of love for her.
This story spread like wildfire. Crowds of selfish people of the world started coming to him. Some ask for a son, some ask for money.
In this way, seeing the obstacle in the love of God, the king protected that girl in the temple and made arrangements for her security to sing Geet Govind during the daily Mangala Aarti in Jagannath temple. Since then, Geet Govind is being sung daily in Mangala Aarti in Shri Jagannath Temple.
