It is believed that wherever there is a Shiva temple, Nandi is also established there because Nandi is a great devotee of Lord Shiva. Whenever a person comes to Shiva temple, he whispers his wishes into Nandi’s ear. The belief behind this is that Lord Shiva is an ascetic and he always remains in samadhi. In such a situation, there should be no hindrance in his samadhi and penance. Therefore only Nandi conveys our wishes to Lord Shiva. Due to this belief, people call Nandi as their wish.
Nandi is the incarnation of Shiva
There was a sage named Shilad, who was celibate. Seeing the end of the dynasty, their ancestors asked them to produce children. Shilad Muni pleased Lord Shiva and asked for a childless and deathless son. Lord Shiva gave this boon to Shilad Muni. One day when Shilad Muni was plowing the land, he found a child. Shilad named him Nandi. One day two sages named Mitra and Varun came to Shilad’s ashram. He told that Nandi is short lived.Hearing this, Nandi started worshiping Mahadev. Pleased, Lord Shiva appeared and said that you are a part of me, so how can you be afraid of death? Saying this, Lord Shiva also made Nandi his Ganadhyaksha.
