RITUALS

Why do we perform Aarti?

Share

Aarti holds a special place in Hindu religious ceremonies, including evening worship and any auspicious ritual. In the scriptures, Aarti is also called “Aaratri” or “Neerajan.”

He has not only been telling about the glory of Aarti, its method, its scientific importance etc. but has also been making people experience its benefits directly through group Aarti in his satsang ceremonies.

“Aarti is a way of purifying the environment and harmonizing our own auras and those of others. When we perform aarti, it gives us aura and energy. The practice of performing aarti on auspicious occasions, in honor of God and saints, invented by the sages of Hinduism, keeps harmful bacteria at bay, harmonizes one’s emotions, and contributes greatly to spiritual progress.

If an aarti is performed before an auspicious deed, the auspicious deed yields quick results. If an aarti is performed after an auspicious deed, any shortcomings in the auspicious deed are made up for. The Skanda Purana describes the glory of Aarti. Lord Krishna says:

Mantrahinam kriyahinam yatkritam pujanam mam.

sarv sampoornataameti krte niraajane sut..
“That which is worthy of my worship without mantras and rituals (required rituals), becomes absolutely valuable upon offering prayers to me.” (Skanda Purana, Vaishnava Khand, Margashirsha Mahatmya: 9:37)
The secret of the number of flames
Aarti is usually performed with a five-flame lamp, called a “panchadeepa.” Aarti lamps may consist of either one, three, or five lamps. Lighting an odd number of lamps (1, 3, 5,…) creates positive energy in the atmosphere. If the number of lamps is even (2, 4, 6,…), the process of energy transfer is deactivated.
Why Aarti of the guest?
Every person’s body radiates energy and aura. When a guest arrives, we perform aarti for him, because in Sanatan culture, guests are considered gods. Every person has his own aura, so Aarti is performed so that the new aura of the guest does not disturb the aura of the people living in the house and he does not feel like a stranger. This brought him immense affection and he merged into the aura of the home. What a beautiful system Sanatana Dharma has!”
