Meaning: As soon as all the brothers became virgins, their Guru, father and mother performed the sacred rituals for them. Shri Raghunathji (along with his brothers) went to the Guru’s house to study knowledge and within a short time he acquired all the knowledge.
Janeu is also called Upveet, Yagya Sutra, Vratabandh, Balabandh, Monibandh and Brahmasutra. This is also called Upanayana Sanskar. ‘Upanayan’ means ‘to take near or adjacent.’ with whom? Leading to Brahma (God) and knowledge.
Only after wearing the sacred thread, a Dwij child gets the right to perform Yagya and self-study. Dwija means second birth.
Why do we wear Janeu? Janeu is worn under ‘Upanayana Sanskar’, one of the sixteen rituals of Hindu religion, which is also called ‘Yajnopavit Sanskar’. Mundan and bathing in holy water are also part of this ritual. In ancient times, initiation was given to make disciples, saints and Brahmins. One of the ways of giving initiation was to wear the sacred thread. In ancient times, this Sankar was done before taking initiation in Gurukul or becoming a Sanyasi.
Yagyopaveet is also called Vratbandh. Without being bound by fasts, human progress is not possible. Yagyopaveet is considered a symbol of fasting. That is why it is also called sutra. In religious scriptures, Yama-Niyam has been considered as a fast. Upanayana (Janeu) Sanskar is very important for increasing the longevity of the child and becoming an authority on Gayatri and Vedas.
Giving initiation: The practice of giving initiation was started by the Vedic sages. In ancient times, initiation was given to make disciples and Brahmins. Even when parents sent their children for education, initiation was given. According to Hindu religion, initiation is to give direction to a directionless life. Initiation is an oath, a contract, and a resolution. After initiation the person becomes Dwija. Dwija means second birth. Second personality.
This ritual in other religions: This Upanayana ritual inspired by Sanatan Dharma will be found in all religions. This tradition of giving initiation has been there since ancient times, however, with time, initiation into other religions started being used to convert to their own religion. This Arya Sanskar has been adopted in different forms in all religions for some reason or the other. This rites are performed before circumambulating the Kaaba in Mecca.
On close inspection of the very ancient Buddha statue of Sarnath, a fine line of sacred thread is visible on its chest.
This ritual is also performed in Jainism. Vitra Mekhala Adhoasana (Lungi) is also related to Parsis. In Sikhism it is called Amrit Sanchar. Christianity adopted this tradition from Buddhism which they call baptism. In Judaism and Islam, initiation is done by circumcision.
Janeu should be worn by every Hindu who wants to live a simple life by giving up meat and alcohol. Here we are telling you the benefits of wearing sacred thread. By following the rules of Janeu, you can live a healthy life.
Protection from bacteria and germs: People who wear sacred thread and follow the rules related to it, keep their mouth closed while defecating. After getting into the habit of this, people easily get saved from the wrath of bacteria and germs found in dirty places.
Kidney protection: It is a rule that one should drink water while sitting, that is, one should not drink water while standing. According to this rule, urination should be done while sitting only. By following the above two rules, there is no pressure on the kidneys. By wearing the sacred thread both these rules become mandatory.
Protection from heart disease and blood pressure: According to research, medical science has also found that people who wear sacred thread have less risk of heart disease and blood pressure than others. Janeu is also helpful in controlling the blood flow in the body. According to doctors, when the sacred thread passes near the heart, it reduces the chances of heart disease, because blood circulation starts functioning smoothly.
Protection from Paralysis: A person wearing the sacred thread reduces the chances of getting paralyzed because it has been told that the person wearing the sacred thread should remain clenched while performing Laghushanka. Biting one’s teeth while urinating does not paralyze a person.
Prevention from constipation: There is a rule to wrap the sacred thread tightly over the ear. Doing this also puts pressure on the nerves passing near the ears, which are directly related to the intestines. There is no complaint of constipation due to pressure on these veins. When the stomach is clean, both body and mind remain healthy.
Protection of sperms: Those nerves also pass near the right ear, which are related to the testicles and genitals. Wrapping the sacred thread on the right ear during urination suppresses the veins from which semen comes out. In such a situation, sperms are protected knowingly or unknowingly. This increases the strength and sharpness of a person.
Protection of memory power: Keeping and tightening the sacred thread on the ear every day does not cause loss of memory power. Due to this the memory bank keeps increasing. Due to pressure on the ears, those nerves of the brain which are related to memory become active. In fact, this was the main reason behind children holding their ears or writhing when they made mistakes.
Mental strength increases with purity of conduct. Just by realizing that the sacred thread is on the shoulder, a person starts staying away from bad deeds. With the realization of purity, conduct becomes pure. Purity of conduct increases mental strength.
Protection from evil spirits: There is a belief that evil spirits do not come near those who wear the sacred thread. The reason for this is that the person wearing the sacred thread himself becomes a pure soul and spiritual energy automatically develops in him.
Why is the sacred thread wrapped only in the ears? Before immersing urine and feces, the sacred thread has to be wrapped tightly around the ears twice. Due to this, the two veins behind the ear, which are connected to the intestines of the stomach, put pressure on the intestines and open them completely, due to which stool excretion takes place easily and there is some reduction in the time of stool and urine excretion from a vein near the ear. The liquid is dispersed.
Janeu stops its flow, due to which constipation, ACDT, stomach disease, urinary disease, blood pressure, heart diseases and other infectious diseases do not occur.
Wrapping the sacred thread in the ear awakens the Surya Nadi in a person. Wrapping the sacred thread on the ears also prevents stomach related diseases and blood pressure problems. The person wearing the sacred thread is bound by rules. He cannot remove his sacred thread after defecation.
Until he washes his hands and feet and rinses them. Therefore, he removes the sacred thread from his ears only after cleaning himself thoroughly. This cleanliness protects him from diseases of teeth, mouth, stomach, worms and bacteria. For this reason, heart patients are most benefited by the sacred thread.
According to medical science, the vein of the right ear is connected to the testicles and genitals. Wrapping the sacred thread on the right ear at the time of urination protects the sperms. According to scientists, in case of frequent nightmares, wearing sacred thread provides relief from this problem.
It is believed that there is a natural line running down the back of the body which works like an electric current. This line is located from the right shoulder to the waist. By wearing sacred thread the electric flow remains controlled, which makes it easier to control sexual anger.
Another fact hidden behind children’s ear pulling in schools is that it presses the nerve of the ear, which activates the dormant part of the brain. That is why the purpose of wearing Yajnopaveet on the right ear has been stated.
Religious, social and religious importance of wearing sacred thread
Religious significance of Janeu: Yajnopavita is called Vratbandh. Without being bound by fasts, human progress is not possible. Yagyopaveet is considered a symbol of fasting. That is why it is also called sutra (formula, support). Yama-Niyam has been considered a fast in religious scriptures. To increase the longevity of the child, Upanayana (Janeu) Sanskar is very important to become an authority on Gayatri and Vedas.Janeu gives a feeling of purity. It protects the mind from bad actions. Just by realizing that there is a sacred thread on the shoulder, a person starts staying away from bad deeds.
From the religious point of view, it is believed that wearing the sacred thread purifies the body. According to the scriptures, gods like Aditya, Vasu, Rudra, Vayu, Agni, Dharma, Veda, Aap, Som and Surya etc. are considered to reside in the right ear. Therefore, even by just touching it with the right hand, one gets the result of Aachman. Aachaman i.e. the process of getting purified with water before going to a temple or performing puja is called Aachaman. In Islam religion it is called Waju.
Dwija: Coming out of the narrowness of selfishness and entering into the greatness of altruism, giving up animality and assuming humanity is called second birth. The body is born from the semen and semen of the parents, just like other living beings. To pledge to adopt an idealistic life goal is to enter into real human life. This is called dualism. Dwijatva means second birth.
Social significance: A man is made to wear two sacred thread. After wearing it, it tells her that she has to bear the burden or responsibility of two people, one from the wife’s side and the other from her side i.e. the husband’s side.
There are 9 threads in each sacred thread which tell us that we have to bear the burden of the wife and 9 planets of the wife’s side, this is a debt. Now if we take out 1-1 thread from these 9 threads, there are 27-27 threads in it. That is, we have to bear the burden or debt of 27 stars each of the wife and husband. Now if we look at it on the basis of numerology, it is 27+9 = 36, which when converted into a single digit comes out to be 36 = 3+6 = 9, which is a whole number.
Now if we add two more sacred thread numbers i.e. 2 to this 9 then it will be 9+2= 11 which tells us that our life is made up of the union of two people alone i.e. husband and wife (1 and 1). 1+1 = 2 which is the number of the Moon according to numerology. When we bear the debt of both our parties, we attain infinite peace.
Rules for wearing Yagyopavit
It is mandatory for the person wearing Yagyopavit to follow all the rules. Once a man wears the sacred thread, he cannot take it off. If it becomes dirty, one has to wear another sacred thread immediately after taking it off.
A girl can also wear the sacred thread: A girl who has to follow lifelong celibacy can wear the sacred thread. A celibate wears a sacred thread of three threads and a married person wears a sacred thread of six threads. Out of the six threads of Yagyopavit, three threads are mentioned as his own and three threads are mentioned as his wife’s.
When to wear sacred thread: The Upanayana Sanskar of the child is performed in the eighth year of the day of conception. Vidya starts only after wearing the sacred thread, but nowadays, after the end of the Guru tradition, most of the people do not wear the sacred thread, so they are made to wear the sacred thread before marriage. But that is nothing more than just performing rituals, because they do not understand the importance of sacred thread.
Yatha-Nivini Dakshin Karne Yajnopavitam Kritva Urinepurishe Visarjet.
That is, it is necessary to keep the sacred thread on the right ear at the time of defecation and urination. Take it off only after washing and rinsing your hands and feet.
It is necessary to wear the sacred thread before performing any religious work, worship, yagya etc.
Marriage does not take place until the sacred thread is worn.
Whenever the sacred thread is passed while urinating or defecating, it is worn.
Yajnopaveet should be placed on the right ear before excreting feces and urine and should be removed only after cleaning the hands. Its basic meaning is that the sacred thread should be higher than the waist and should not become impure. Your fasting resolution should be meditated again and again on this pretext.
If any string of Yagnopaveet gets broken or it is more than 6 months old, it should be replaced. The broken image is not kept on the body. If the threads start becoming raw and dirty, it is advisable to change them beforehand.
There is a tradition of changing it after the Sutak of birth and death. Women who do not have small children in their lap can also handle the sacred thread; But they have to change it every month after defecation.
Yagyopavit is not taken out of the body. To clean it, we wash it by rotating it while wearing it around the neck. If it falls by mistake, there is a rule to chant one rosary of penance or change it.
To maintain the dignity of the idol, do not tie key chains etc. to it. Make separate arrangements for this. When the children become capable of following these rules, then only they should be offered Yagnopavita.
What is Janeu? You must have seen that many people keep a raw thread wrapped from their left shoulder to their right arm. This thread is called Janeu. Janeu is a thread with three threads. It is a sacred thread made of cotton, which a person wears over the left shoulder and under the right arm. That is, it is put around the neck in such a way that it remains above the left shoulder.
Why three threads? There are mainly three threads in the sacred thread. First, these three sutras are symbols of Trimurti Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. Secondly, these three sutras are the symbols of Devrin, Pitrurin and Rishirin and thirdly it is the symbol of Satva, Raja and Tama. Fourthly, it symbolizes the three stages of Gayatri Mantra. Pancham is the symbol of the three Ashrams. Yagyopaveet is taken down in Sannyasa Ashram.
Nine strings: Each string of Yajnopavita has three strings. In this way the total number of stars is nine. There is a total of nine including one mouth, two nostrils, two eyes, two ears, two of stool and urine. We should speak and eat well with our mouth, see well with our eyes and hear well with our ears.
Five knots: Five knots are tied in Yagyopaveet which are symbols of Brahma, Dharma, Ardha, Kama and Moksha. It is also a symbol of five yagyas, five senses and five deeds.
Length of the sacred thread: The length of the sacred thread is 96 fingers. Its meaning is that the person wearing the sacred thread should try to learn 64 arts and 32 sciences. There are a total of 32 Vidyas including four Vedas, four Upavedas, six Angas, six Darshanas, three sutras and nine Aranyakas. In 64 arts like architectural construction, culinary art, painting, literary art, handicraft, language, instrument making, sewing, embroidery, weaving, handicraft, jewelery making, agricultural knowledge etc.
Clothes for wearing the sacred thread: While wearing the sacred thread, the child has a stick in his hand. He wears only one unstitched cloth. There is a yellow scarf around the neck. After shaving, his hair is kept. There is a Khadau on the foot. Mekhala and Kopin are worn.
Mekhala, Kopien, Dand Mekhala and Kopien are given jointly. A cord like thread that can be tied around the waist is called a belt. Mekhala is also called Munj and Kardhani. Mekhala is made from a long piece of cotton string and Kalawa stitched to the cloth. Kopin is a loincloth about 4 inches wide and one and a half feet long. It can also be kept stitched with the belt. A roll like stick or Brahma Danda can also be used for punishment. Yajnopaveet is kept colored yellow.
Wearing of sacred thread By wearing unstitched clothes, holding a stick in hand, wearing Kopin and yellow scarf, sacred thread is worn as per the rituals. There is a Yagya for wearing the sacred thread, in which the boy wearing the sacred thread participates along with his entire family. The specific formula consecrated by the Yagya is prepared by writing it in a special method. This Yagyopavit consisting of three sutras is always worn after Guru Diksha. When the sacred thread becomes impure, it is changed.
Gayatri Mantra Yajnopavita starts with Gayatri Mantra. The combination of Gayatri-Upveet is Dwijatva. Yagyopaveet has three strings, Gayatri has three stages. ‘Tatsaviturvarenyam’ is the first stage, ‘Bhargodevasya Dhimahi’ is the second stage, ‘Dhiyo Yo Na: Prachodayat’ is the third stage. Image of Gayatri Mahamantra – Yajnopavita, which contains 9 words, three stages, including three Vyahritis.
The mantra for wearing Yagyopavit is
Yajnopavitam param pavitram prajapateryatsahajan purastat.
Ayushyagram Pratimuncha Shubhram Yajnopavitam Balamastu Tejah.
This is how the rituals are performed: Before starting the Yajnopavit Sanskar, the child is shaved. On the auspicious day of Upanayana Sanskar, the boy is bathed and his head and body are applied with sandalwood and saffron paste and he is made a celibate by wearing a sacred thread. Then let’s do home.
Then Ganesh etc. deities are ritually worshipped, the Yagya altar is made and the child is made to sit after wearing garlands along with undergarments. Then, after invoking the Gayatri Mantra ten times, along with the invocation of the Gods, a promise is taken from him to teach the scriptures and observe the fasts.
Then they make them sit with the children of their age and feed them churma, then after taking bath, the Guru, father or elder brother recites the Gayatri Mantra and says that from today onwards you have become a Brahmin i.e. one who believes in Brahma (one who believes only in God).
After this, they cover themselves with deer skin and tie a scarf made of Munj (belt) and put a stick in their hands. After that the child begs for alms from the people present. After having dinner in the evening, he runs away from home with the stick on his shoulder and says that he is going to Kashi to study. Later some people catch them by luring them with marriage. After that the boy is considered a Brahmin.
