Why four doors in the Golden Temple
Not only India but the world also calls it the Golden Temple, which is a religious Gurudwara of the Sikh religion in the city of Amritsar in Punjab, India.
But do you know that Golden Temple is not the real name of this holy place, rather the real name of the Golden Temple is Sri Harmandir Sahib (Devasthan) which is also called Sri Darbar Sahib.
One of the special features of Harmandir Sahib is the four doors built at its four corners. Whereas generally religious places have only one door.
There is a special reason behind this. The four main doors built in Harmandir Sahib reflect the thinking of Sikhs towards other religions, the meaning of those four doors is that anyone, of any religion, can come to that temple.
At present, more than 1.25 lakh people come to the Golden Temple every day for the purpose of devotional worship and consume ‘Langar’, the main offering of the Sikh Gurudwara.
Let us tell you that the Golden Temple Amritsar was established in 1574 by the fourth Sikh Guru, Guru Ramdasji. Guru Arjun, the fifth Sikh Guru, had planned the construction of Harmandir Sahib. The main objective of building Harmandir Sahib was to create a place for men and women where both could worship God equally.
According to Khalsa Panth beliefs, the ancient history of Sikhism has also been told inside Harmandir Sahib. Harmandir Sahib Complex is established on Akal Takht itself.
But in the beginning of the 19th century, when the Turks attacked Punjab, Maharaja Ranjit Singh saved it from external attacks. He also covered the upper part of the Gurudwara with gold. After that people started offering gold in Harmandir Sahib.
Devotees offer so much gold there that the entire roof of this temple where Guru Granth Sahib is worshiped and Kirtan is performed, is covered with gold.
Due to the gold coating on the main part of the temple, its name Golden Temple became popular.
Today the Golden Temple is a global heritage, where people come not only from the country but also from abroad and its langar service is also the biggest service in the world, more than 40 thousand people serve here every day.
