Share

Just as the worship and darshan of Lord Shiva is important, similarly the darshan of Nandi is also done.

You must have often seen the statue of Nandi in front of the statue of Bholenath in temples. It is said that wherever in this world the idol of Bholenath is present, the idol of Nandi is also present right in front of it. Just as the worship and darshan of Lord Shiva is important, similarly the darshan of Nandi is also done. But have you ever wondered why the idol of Nandi always sits right in front of the idol of Bholenath? Actually, there is a mythological story behind this… According to this story, due to Shilad Muni becoming celibate, there was a crisis of carrying forward the dynasty,So to get relief from this crisis, Indra advised Shilad Muni to do penance for Bholenath.

After that, Sage Shilad started doing rigorous penance for Lord Shankar in order to have a child. Pleased with this rigorous practice, Bholenath gave a boon that he himself would appear as his son. After some time, Nandi appeared at Shilad Muni’s place. After which Lord Shiva got Nandi anointed and Nandi became Nandishwar.

Later Nandi was married to Suyasha, daughter of the Maruts. Lord Shankar gave a boon to Nandi that wherever Nandi resided, he too would reside there. It is said that since then the idol of Nandi is installed in front of Lord Shiva in every Shiva temple.

Lord Shiva always remains sitting in samadhi. It is said that if one’s wish is whispered into Nandi’s ear, he definitely conveys it to Lord Shiva. Nandi is a great devotee of Lord Shiva. Therefore, Nandi is established in every Shiva temple, so that devotees can convey their messages to Lord Shiva.
