Yamkeshwar Mahadev Temple:- Yamkeshwar Mahadev Temple is located in Yamkeshwar block of Podi Garhwal district in Devbhoomi Uttarakhand of India. This very ancient and special Yamkeshwar Mahadev Temple has its own mythological significance, it is the only temple in the whole of India and the world where the name of the immortal Yamraj is taken before God.

यमकेश्वर महादेव मंदिर उत्तराखंड राज्य के Pauri Garhwal जिले के दो द्वार कोटद्वार और हरिद्वार के मध्य स्थित है। यह शिव मंदिर ऋषिकेश,लक्ष्मण झूला कोटद्वार मार्ग पर स्थित है। कोटद्वार से Yamkeshwar Mahadev Temple की दुरी 75.3 km है,जबकि हरिद्वार से दुरी 76.4km और ऋषिकेश से दुरी क्रमशः 53.4 km है।

The mound near Yamkeswar Mahadev Temple, which is in the shape of a Peepal leaf, is also like a natural Shivalinga, around which water flows. Some people also call it by the name of Yamadweep. Brahma ji’s son Kritu Rishi and daughter of Kardam Rishi a son named Mrigashringa was born. Sage Mrigashringa got married to a woman named Suvrita. A son was born to Mrigasringa and Suvrita, who was named Mrikandu. Sage Mrikandu was full of all virtues, as per the orders of his father Mrigashringa Rishi, Mrikandu married Marudwati, daughter of Mridgal Muni.

After many years of marriage, when there was no child in the house of Mrikandu Rishi and Marudwati, they went to Kashi along with their wife and did penance for Lord Shiv Shankar. Questioned by the penance of both of them, Lord Shiva said –

“Hey Vatsa, I am pleased with your worship. Tell me, what boon do you ask for?”

Then sage Mrikandu said – “Lord, you have listened to us even after many years of marriage, so please give us the gem of a son.”

Lord Shiva says – “O sage, do you want a son without any qualities or a bright and talented son of sixteen years of age.”

On this the sage asks the Lord for the blessing of a virtuous son.

After some time, Marudvati conceives and a bright son is born to her, who was named “Markandye”.

At the beginning of the sixteenth year of Markand, the brilliant son of Mrikandu, sage Mrikandu’s heart was filled with grief, all his senses were disturbed, he started wailing in grief. Seeing his father extremely sad and mourning, Rishi Markandeya asked him the reason for his grief. Mrikandu explained the reason for his sad heart and said that son, Lord Shiva has given you only sixteen years of age. The time of its end has come, hence a wave of grief is running in my body and mind.

Mrityudev got scared by his feet and went away. This place was named Yamrar because of Yama’s quarrel. Which later became famous by the name Yamradi.

Later Yamraj came to the present place named Yamkeshwar and started worshiping Lord Rudra. Then Lord Bholenath came to a place named Yamkeswar and became enraged and said to Yamraj that you should not go to the place where my Mrityunjay is chanted.At last, being pleased with the praise of Yamraj, Shiva said that at the place where you are standing, an idol in the form of my self-proclaimed Linga has arisen and you should worship it.

This statue will be famous in your name only. The one who worships this Shivalinga will avert even the worst mortalities and untimely deaths. The ancient place of penance of Markandeya and the temple of Shiva established by Yamraj is situated in the present Yamkeswar, which is today famous by the name of Yamkeshwar Mahadev Temple.

This temple is famous for its natural beauty, the river Satrudra (Bean River) keeps flowing near the temple premises. Yamkeswar Temple is surrounded by beautiful mountains on all sides, there are many villages situated in these mountains, whose center of worship is this Yamkeswar Temple.

According to the folklore in the area, there is a village named Kanda near the Yamkeshwar temple, an old woman of the same village had first seen the Shivalinga of this temple. At that time, there was abundance of forests and bushes around the temple area, as soon as the village woman started digging with a hoe (a digging instrument) to find the roots, milk started flowing out of the stone at that place due to the blow of the hoe. Put.

Lord Yamkeswar appeared and asked her to ask for a boon. The old woman got scared and asked for a boon full of tubers and rich grains. When she went home and saw a house full of tubers and rich grains, she informed the entire village about this. And then the said Yamkeshwar Mahadev Temple was built and since then this place has remained the center of faith of the people.

There is also a temple of Mata Kali near Yamkeshwar Mahadev Temple. This temple is not very ancient, there is a surprising and very interesting and sattvik story of the construction of this temple which is as follows – Some time a Siddha Tantrik Baba Jogendra Giri Maharaj came to Yamkeshwar Mahadev Temple. The local people were greatly impressed by his accomplishment and devotion. Some of them wanted to see the demonstration of his Tantric power, and they told Baba that if you have the power, then invoke and establish Maa Kali here in the temple premises.

Baba agreed to this call and asked some fearless people of the village to join him and said that no one would move from their place until this ritual was completed, and the things I asked to be offered to Maa Kali. Keep meeting her. Baba started worshiping. Started remembering Kali chanting. After some time, the atmosphere there started resonating with unbearable screams and cries of fierce rage. Seeing all this, everyone got scared and ran away from there, after some time, Baba Jogender appeared in the fierce form of Mata Kali, Baba offered all the things kept near him to Mata.

When all the food items were exhausted, Baba offered the flesh of his body to Mata Kali, due to which Mata Kali became very curious and asked Baba to ask for a boon, Baba said that if I have seen you, that is enough for me, but if Mata Kali If you are happy with me, then I have a request that you become established at this place. And today a temple of Mata Kali is established at that place.
