Someshver Mandir, Bhangarh Fort, Alwar, Rajasthan
As soon as the name of Bhangarh comes, a picture of a mysterious place is drawn in the mind. It is right too. Everything looks mysterious here. Just seeing the half-finished constructions, temples and forts gives a feeling of truth in the popular stories and tales about Bhangarh. Surrounded by hills on three sides, this place is beautiful and historical. According to experts, this place was developed in the 16th century. It was founded by Raja Bhagwant Das, after which Madho Singh, brother of Raja Mansingh of Amer, who was Diwan in Akbar’s court, made it his capital. There is Ganesh temple and Hanuman temple near the entrance.
Apart from this, temples of Someshwar Mahadev, Keshavrai, Gopinath and Mangala Devi are also worth seeing here. These four temples are built in Nagar style. Among the temples, Keshavaraya, Mangala Devi and Gopinath temples are the ones which do not have idols, but Someshwar temple has the idol of Shivling and Nandi. There is a pond near Someshwar Temple in which bathing is currently prohibited.
It is said about Bhanagarh that the consent to build the fort of Bhanagarh was given by Balunath Yogi, whose penance place it was, on the condition that the shadow of the fort should never touch the penance place of Balunath Yogi. But, without paying any attention to this, the construction of the fort continued upwards due to which the shadow of the fort fell on the penance place. On this, Yogi Balunath cursed Bhangarh due to which Bhangarh was destroyed, this Samadhi is still present on the mountain.
Another popular belief is that in order to get the princess Ratnavati of Bhangarh, a Tantrik named Scindia hypnotized the oil being brought for the princess’s use with his magic. Princess Ratnavati dropped the oil on a rock. This led to the death of the Tantrik, but before his death, the Tantrik cursed Bhangarh and the princess for destruction due to which the city was destroyed. It is also said that at present this place is inhabited by the ghosts of the people of that time and no person can stay there even at night.
