The ancient Bamdeveshwar temple established in Banda, Uttar Pradesh is considered the center point of faith in Bundelkhand. According to mythological beliefs, the Shivalinga present in the caves of the mountain was not installed, rather the Shivalinga itself appeared here after the penance of Maharishi Bamdev. Every day there is a crowd of devotees to worship the Shivalinga present inside the cave on the mountain peak, but the number of devotees increases further in the month of Sawan.
On Monday, people reach the temple early in the morning to have darshan and worship of the Lord. The crowd becomes so huge that one has to stand in queues to reach there for darshan.
Every year a barley cave grows higher
Temple priest Maharaj Puttan Tiwari tells that Maharishi Bamdev’s penance place was Bambeshwar mountain. Due to the penance of Maharishi, Shivalinga was established inside the cave, this Shivalinga is more ancient than the 12 Jyotirlingas. Earlier this cave was so low that people had to lie down to visit it.
But gradually the cave became higher and now people enter standing for darshan. The priest says that there is a legend of a barley cave growing higher every year.
Banda got recognition from Rishi Bamdev
Rishi Bam Dev was the son of Rishi Gautam, hence he is also called Gautam. According to the Vedas, the name of Rishi Bamdev also appears among the Saptarishis and he composed music.
He used to reside on this Bamdeveshwar mountain during the Ramayana period. He had established the temple of Lord Shiva situated on this mountain and the name Banda is also named after him. According to religious scriptures, Lord Rama came here and worshiped Shiva.
