About three thousand years old Chandi Devi temple, four kilometers away from Meerut Bhainsali Roadways Bus Stand, 65 kilometers from Delhi, was built by Mandodari, living in Khandak, Meerut Kotwali area. It is said that about four kilometers of tunnel was built from the house to the temple, from this cave she used to come to the temple for worship. Evidence of a tunnel was also found during the excavation. Chandi Devi temple was established in Chaitra Nava Samvatsara, on this occasion a three-day Chandi Devi fair was held here, which was in the form of Paith. Gradually the duration of the fair increased. Now this fair is famous by the name of Nauchandi Fair, the biggest fair of North India.
This is the history of Chandi Devi Temple
Mahendra Kumar Sharma, the chief priest and manager of the ancient Nav Chandi temple, told that about a thousand years ago during the Mughal period, Qutubuddin Aibak’s commander Bale Miyan had fought a battle for the possession of the temple. Where today the tomb of Bale Miyan is said to be, earlier there was a Chandi Devi temple. At that time, Madhu Chandi Bala, daughter of Pandit Hazari Lal, stood at the gate of the temple and protested against Bale Mian, then Madhu Chandi Bala cut off her finger. She was martyred in this battle. Bale Miyan then destroyed this temple. The place where Bale Mian’s finger was cut off, Muslims built a tomb after his death. However, historians say that the real tomb of Bale Miyan is in Bahraich and Urs is also held there. After the temple was destroyed, at a distance of 100 meters from the place where Mandodari had built a cave for worship, it was here during the British period that Pandit Chandi Prasad started the worship by installing the idol of Maa Chandi Devi. उLater, Nav Chandi Devi Temple was built and since then people come to this temple for worship. Ever since the establishment of Chandi Devi Temple, a fair has been organized here. This fair is held a week after Holi, earlier it was held for three days, now it is held for a month. This time the Vikram Samvat 2076 fair was organized. From this we can understand how ancient this temple and fair are.
