“Famous Tantric practitioner of Tara Peeth: Bama Khepa”
“Bama Khepa” (or Bamakhepa, Bama Khyapa, Vama Kshepa) was a renowned Hindu saint from Tarapith, West Bengal. His real name was Bamacharan Chattopadhyaya.
He is considered a great devotee of Goddess Tara and a Tantric practitioner. People called him the “mad saint” because his devotion was so intense and outwardly strange that society began to call him “Khepa” (insane or insane). However, his devotion and accomplishments earned him great respect.
Key facts about him:-
Born in 1837 (some sources say 5 March 1837 or on Shivratri) in Atla village in Birbhum district of West Bengal into a poor Brahmin family.
Died: 1911 in Tarapith
He was a contemporary of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa.
From childhood, he had no interest in worldly things. He called Mother Tara “Bado Ma” (elder mother) and his own mother “Chhota Ma.”
He practiced meditation in the cremation grounds of Tarapith, and there are many famous stories of his direct communication with Mother Tara—such as the Mother accepting offerings from his hands and putting him to sleep in his lap.
It is because of him that Tarapith became a major Shaktipeeth of Mother Tara and a center of Tantric practice.
His samadhi is also located near the Tarapith temple, and millions of devotees worship him even today.
In short, Bama Khepa was a devotee like the “son” of Mother Tara, whose devotion is considered extraordinary in Kaliyuga.
