Share

The ancient temple of Kalika Mata located at Kalighat in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh is known as Garh Kalika. Kalika is considered the most important among the goddesses. Every day a crowd of thousands of devotees gather in the temple of Garh Kalika to have darshan of Maa Kalika.
No one knows about the antiquity of this miraculous temple of Kalika, the goddess of Tantrikas, yet it is believed that it was established during the Mahabharata period, but the idol is from the Satyayuga period. Later, there is mention of this ancient temple being renovated by Emperor Harshvardhan. During the state period, the Maharaja of Gwalior got it rebuilt.
This place of Kalikaji can be reached directly from Gopal temple. Due to being situated at a place called Garh, Garh has become Kalika. There is a statue of a lion vehicle right in front of the entrance of the temple. There are Dharamshalas on both sides. There is a temple of Deviji in the middle. Some parts of the temple were renovated in AD. It was built by Emperor Shriharsh around 606. In Shakti-Sangam-Tantra, there is mention of ‘Avanti Sanjnake Desh Kalika Tantra Vishthati’ Kalika.
Although the temple of Garh Kalika is not included in Shaktipeeth, but due to the presence of Maa Harsiddhi Shaktipeeth in Ujjain area, the importance of this area increases. It is mentioned in the Puranas that the lips of Mother Bhagwati Sati had fallen on the Bhairav mountain situated near the banks of Shipra river in Ujjain.

There is a story in Linga Purana that when Ramchandraji was going to Ayodhya after winning the war, he was staying near the Rudrasagar coast. On the same night, Goddess Kalika, who was out in search of food, came here and tried to catch Hanuman, but Hanuman assumed a very fierce form. Then the goddess ran away in fear. At that time Ansh got abused. The part that remained is known as Kalika.
