Gokarna Mahadev (The Gods of Gokarna) or Gokarneshwor Mahadev Temple (The Lord of Gokarna) is an important Nepali temple, situated near the village of Gokarna, several kilometers northeast of Bodhnath in the Kathmandu Valley. Within the temple’s sanctum lies an important lingam of the Hindu god Shiva, but its fame relies mainly on the collection of statues and carvings around the temple.

The temple of Lord shiva has a river flowing through on the side. People perform sradha rituals at the bank of the river remembering their deceased previous generations. This holy place is a national heritage.

This ancient temple holds immense historical and spiritual significance. According to the temple priest, it is believed that Lord Shiva once took the form of a deer and roamed freely in this area. To bring Shiva back, Brahma and Vishnu broke the deer’s horns, which were then buried at this site. This location is considered part of a Jyotirlinga, symbolizing the body of Lord Shiva. Despite its rich mythology, the temple remains relatively unknown, offering a tranquil and peaceful atmosphere away from crowds. There is no entrance fee, making it easily accessible to all visitors. Devotees often visit the temple to honor their late parents by making offerings, adding a sense of personal connection to the sacred rituals performed here. The temple’s serene environment makes it an ideal spot for introspection and devotion.
