Holashtak falls 8 days before Holi. All auspicious works are banned during Holashtak.
The word Holashtak is made up of two words Holi and Ashtak, which means eight days of Holi. Holashtak starts 8 days before Holi. According to religious belief, any auspicious program like wedding, marriage, mundan, housewarming etc. is considered prohibited during these eight days.
During Holashtak, all the planets remain in a fierce nature, due to which good results of auspicious works are not achieved.
Holashtak date
Holashtak will start from Ashtami Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Phalgun month on 17th March 2024 and will end on Phalgun Purnima on 24th March 2024. Holika Dahan will take place on this day and Rangwali Holi will be played on 25 March 2024.

During the days of Holashtak, the flow of negative energy in the environment increases. This is the reason why auspicious work gets stopped during this period. Moon remains on Ashtami Tithi, Sun on Navami, Saturn on Dashami, Venus on Ekadashi, Jupiter on Dwadashi, Mercury on Trayodashi, Mars on Chaturdashi and Rahu on Purnima. According to Hindu beliefs, if a person does any auspicious work during Holashtak, he faces many problems, or it remains incomplete.

According to the legend, 8 days before Holika Dahan, Prahlad, a great devotee of Lord Vishnu, was tortured a lot by his father Hiranyakashyap. Hiranyakashyap had tortured Prahlad for seven days to turn him away from his devotion to Sri Hari. On the eighth day, Hiranyakashyap’s sister Holika tried to incinerate Prahlad by making him sit in her lap but she failed.
