Everyone has heard of Narada Muni. Narada Jayanti is celebrated every year on the second day of the dark fortnight of the month of Jyeshtha. According to Hindu scriptures, Narada is considered one of the mental sons of Brahma. You can find his stories in every Purana. Let us briefly explore the secret of his powers and his story.

1. According to Hindu mythology, Narada Muni was born from the womb of Brahma, the creator of the universe. According to the Brahmavaivarta Purana, he was born from Brahma’s throat.

2. Devarshi Narada is considered the guru of Maharishi Vyas, Maharishi Valmiki and the great sage Shukdev. It is said that Narada taught the 10,000 sons of Daksha Prajapati about retirement from the world. Being the sage of the gods, Narada Muni is called Devarshi. In the famous Maitrayani Samhita, Narada is honored as an Acharya. In some places, Narada is also described as a disciple of Brihaspati. The Atharvaveda also mentions a sage named Narada several times. He is also mentioned in the story of Lord Satyanarayan.

Narad Muni got Bhrigu’s daughter Lakshmi married to Vishnu. After convincing Indra, he got Urvashi married to Pururava. Got Jalandhar destroyed by Mahadev. Explained the meaning of Akashvani to Kansa. Inspired Valmiki to compose Ramayana. Got Vyasji to compose Bhagwat. By giving sermons to Indra, Chandra, Vishnu, Shankar, Yudhishthir, Ram, Krishna etc., he made them duty-oriented.

3. It is said that he learned music from Brahma. Lord Vishnu explained the various forms of Maya to Narada. Narada is adept in many arts and sciences. Many scriptures consider him an incarnation of Vishnu, and as such, Narada is a seer of past, present and future. He is considered a devotee of Vedanta, a devotee of yoga, a music scholar, a connoisseur of medicine, a scholar of scriptures, and a leader of the devotional spirit. Devarshi Narada is considered to be a great scholar of many scriptures like Shruti-Smriti, History, Puranas, Grammar, Vedanga, Music, Astronomy-Geography, Astrology and Yoga.

4. Narada Muni is the sage who paved the way for the Bhagavata path, and the Pancharatra is his primary text. He also authored the famous Narada Purana, which contains 25,000 verses. Furthermore, the Narada Samhita is an excellent treatise on music. In Narada’s Bhakti Sutra, he describes the glory of devotion to the Lord. Furthermore, the Brihannaradiya Upapurana-Samhita (Smriti Granth), the Narada-Parivraja Upanishad, and the Naradiya Shiksha, along with numerous hymns, are also available.

5. Narada is considered a devotee of Vishnu and has been blessed with immortality. By the grace of Lord Vishnu, he can appear anywhere in all ages and all three worlds. It is also believed that he used to travel through the sky with the power of Laghima Shakti. Laghima means small, and Laghu means moving through the sky by holding a light substance like cotton. There is also a theory of time travel. In ancient times, many Hindu gods like Sanatkumar, Narada, Ashvin Kumar, etc. used to travel through time. The Vedas and Puranas mention many such incidents.

6. Devarshi Narada holds the distinction of being the world’s first journalist or reporter, as he initiated journalism by exchanging messages while traveling from one planet to another. Thus, Devarshi Narada is the first man, pioneer, and father of journalism. He continues to wander and travel from place to place.

According to another story, Daksha became enraged when Narada turned his sons away from the world by teaching them yoga and killed them. Then, at Brahma’s request, Daksha promised to give him a daughter, and when she marries Kashyapa, Narada will be reborn. The Puranas also mention that King Prajapati Daksha cursed Narada, preventing him from staying anywhere for more than two minutes. This is why Narada is often on the move.

7. It is said that Lord Vishnu explained the various forms of Maya to Narada. Once, during a journey, Narada bathed in a lake and became a woman. In female form, Narada lived for 12 years as the wife of King Taljangha. Then, by the grace of Lord Vishnu, he was given the opportunity to bathe in the lake again and returned to his original form.

Narada always sings the praises of Lord Vishnu with the melodious tune of his veena. He constantly wanders around chanting “Narayan, Narayan.” He also helps the devotees of his deity, Vishnu. It is believed that Narada inspired devotees like Prahlad, Ambarisha, and Dhruva to follow the path of devotion by giving them sermons.

8. It is said that Narada taught Daksha Prajapati’s ten thousand sons to renounce the world, while Brahma wanted to initiate them into the path of creation. Brahma then cursed him. As a result of this curse, Narada was born on Mount Gandhamadana in the Gandharva yoni. In this yoni, Narada’s name was Upbarhan. It is also believed that in the previous Kalpa, Narada was a Gandharva named Upbarhan. It is said that he had 60 wives and was always surrounded by beautiful women because of his good looks. Therefore, Brahma cursed him to be born as a Shudra.

Following this curse, Narada was born to a maidservant from the Shudra caste. His father died soon after his birth. One day, his mother also passed away due to a snake bite. Narada was left alone in this world. He was only five years old at the time. One day, during the Chaturmas (fourteenth month), saints stayed in his village. Narada served the saints well. By their grace, he attained enlightenment. When the time came, Naradaji left his five-elemental body and at the end of the Kalpa, he incarnated as the mental son of Brahmaji.

9. According to the Balakanda of Tulsidas’s Shri Ramcharitmanas, Narada became arrogant, believing he had conquered lust. God once used his divine power to create a city where a beautiful princess’s swayamvara was taking place. This is recounted in the story. Narada approached the Lord and asked for his beautiful face so that the princess would admire him. But for the sake of his devotee, the Lord gave Narada the face of a monkey. At the swayamvara, the princess (Lakshmi herself) chose the Lord as her husband. When Narada saw his face in the water, he became furious. He cursed Lord Vishnu that he too would have to endure the separation from his wife, and that only monkeys would help him.

10. According to the Puranas, Lord Brahma asked Narada to participate in the work of creation and marry, but he disobeyed his father Brahma and remained devoted to Vishnu. Angered, Lord Brahma cursed Narada to remain unmarried for life.

Finally, on Narada Jayanti, worship of Narada Muni is performed only after worshipping Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. The Gita and Durga Saptashati should be recited on this day. On this day, a flute should be presented to Lord Krishna at a Lord Vishnu temple, along with donations of food and clothing.
