There is a temple of Maa Kali in Etawah about which it is believed that the immortal character of Mahabharata period Ashwatthama first comes and worships here. This temple is situated on the banks of Yamuna river at a distance of just 5 kilometers from Etawah headquarters. This temple acquires special importance on the occasion of Navratri. Devotees from far away places come to this temple with the intention of fulfilling their wishes. Chief Mahant of Kali Vahan temple, Radheshyam Dwivedi says that this temple named Kali Vahan has its own importance. They have been serving this temple for about 42 years but till date it has not been known that when the temple is cleaned in the dark of night. The sanctum sanctorum is opened early in the morning. At that time, fresh flowers are found inside the temple which proves that someone comes in an invisible form and worships. It is said that the immortal characters of Mahabharata come to worship at Ashvasthama temple.

Regarding the importance of this temple, Dr. Shailendra Sharma, Head of the History Department of KK Post Graduate College, says that no event in history can be considered authentic unless there is archaeological, literary and historical evidence in its favor. Not be available. This temple, which was once the center of faith of the dreaded dacoits of Chambal, associated with the civilization of Mahabharata period, has been so much attached to the dacoits that they were successful in coming and worshiping with their gang of dacoits despite the vigilance of the police, but this was confirmed only then. This happened when bells and flags bearing the name of the dacoits were seen hoisted in the temple.

It has been named Kali Bhawan in the gazetteer of Etawah. Situated near the banks of Yamuna, this temple is the main center of Goddess devotees. Being an Ishtam i.e. Shaiva area, there are a large number of Durga temples along with Shiva temples in Etawah. There are statues of Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati. The sculpture in this temple dates back to the 10th to 12th century. The construction of the present temple is a contribution of the twentieth century. There are three idols of goddesses in the temple – Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati. The worship of Mahakali is the contribution of the initial form of Shakti Dharma. According to Markandeya Purana and other mythological stories, Durga ji was initially black. Once she was in an embrace with Lord Shiva, Lord Shiva jokingly said that it looked as if a black serpent was wrapped around a white sandalwood tree. Parvati ji got angry and through penance she attained Gaura Varna. Shiva, Durga and her family are also revered in a Mathiya in the temple premises. The verandah outside the Mathiya was built by the ancestors of Justice Prem Shankar Gupta. It is mentioned in Mahabharata that when Durgaji killed Mahishasura and Shumbh-Nishumbh, she also started being called by the names Kali, Karali, Kalyani etc.

Kali Vahan Temple has been the center of attraction for cinematic directors for a long time. Some part of producer director Krishna Mishra’s film Behad has also been shot in this temple. This film titled Behad is based on the lives of bandits who were active in the Chambal Valley between 1978 and 2005. The court has given its verdict regarding the ownership of the historical Kali Vahan temple situated on the banks of Yamuna river. After a long court battle, the Kali Vahan temple is no longer a public temple but has come under the purview of a private temple. The sons of former temple priest Shankar Giri have been handed over to the temple following court orders. Sushil Chandra Goswami, who worshiped with Shankar Giri about 22 years ago, formed a new committee and claimed his right over this temple in the court in 1997, but the court appointed a receiver during the hearing of the case. After that the hearing continued in the court. After cross-examination of witnesses, evidence and government lawyers, the Additional District Judge considered the Kali Vahan temple as private property and handed it over to Shankar Giri’s sons Ravindra Giri and Vijay Giri. Who is now actually busy in running the temple. To make this temple beautiful, many such schemes have been run by the Uttar Pradesh and Central Government as well as the local Municipal Council, using the funds of which the temple has got a new and better look. The devotees of Maa Kali sitting at a distance also like this form of the temple very much.
