Kandolia Temple

Kandolia Temple, 2 km from Pauri Garhwal city. There is a religious, holy and ancient temple situated at a distance of . The temple is dedicated to Kandoliya Devta, the local land deity. Lord Shiva is worshiped in the temple in the form of Kandoliya deity. This religious place offers a panoramic view of the great Himalayan peaks and the Gangavarsun valley. Kandoliya Devta is the favorite “Goril Devta” of the people of Dungriyal Negi caste of Champawat region. In this area full of natural beauty, there are dense trees of tall pine, deodar, oak, buransh, kaphal etc. A beautiful park and sports complex is also located near this temple. There is a religious belief that many years ago a girl from Kumaon was married to the Dungriyal Negi caste in Pauri village.  After marriage, the girl brought her presiding deity in a ‘kandi’ (small basket). After this, this deity of Kumaon came to be known as “Kandolia Devta” and his worship was also started in Pauri village. It is believed that later the God came in the dream of a person from the same village and ordered that his place should be made at a higher place. After this, the Kandoliya deity was installed on the hill above Pauri city. Since its establishment, Kandolia temple became famous as the God of Justice. In the year 1989, Padmendra Singh Negi, Prithvi Pal Singh Chauhan and Surendra Naithani, residents of Pauri village, started the tradition of offering formal puja in the temple of Kandolia Devta, since then a three-day puja is held here every year. In this three-day event, hundreds of devotees come here to ask for wishes, and when their wishes are fulfilled, many offer bells, umbrellas etc.

How did Kandolia Temple get the name “Kandolia”?

It is said about the Kandolia Temple that the ancestors of the Dungriyal Negi caste had requested the God Goril to reside at this place, whom they had brought with them to Pauri village. The people of Pauri village had brought their presiding deity to “Kandi” due to his old age. Earlier he had established his Ishtadev at Panchayati Chowk of Pauri village but since this place was in depth, “Goril Devta” asked to establish himself on the peak. After this, the presiding deity was established on the top peak of Pauri city and the deity started being worshiped as the local guardian. It is said that the presiding deity of Pauri village was brought to this place in Kandi, hence the presiding deity of Pauri village came to be known as “Kandolia Devta”. After some time the surrounding area also came to be known as “Kandolia”. In the local community, Kandoliya deity is worshiped as Bolanda deity. The most important thing is that whenever Kandoliya Devta senses any incident or calamity, Kandoliya Devta makes a noise in the entire city and alerts the residents of the city.

Kandolia Devta Temple Pauri is a great place to spend a lovely time with your loved ones. Come and enjoy this popular tourist destination.
