Know why the name of Ram is greater than Ram?

Share

Once, in the court of Lord Rama, Hanumanji Maharaj became so engrossed in serving Lord Rama that he did not notice the arrival of Guru Vashishtha. Everyone rose to greet him, but Hanumanji was unable to do so. Vashishtha asked Shri Ram what the punishment should be for disrespecting Guru Ram by not greeting him in the full court. Shri Ram said, “Please tell me, Gurudev.” Vashishtha replied, “Death penalty.”Shri Ram said, “I agree.” Then he said, “Gurudev, please tell me who committed this crime? I will tell you, but Ram is so dear to you that you will punish yourself but not him.”Shri Ram said, “Gurudev, everyone is equal to Ram. No, Ram! I have no doubt about you, but I doubt the fullness of the punishment. Therefore, only if you assure me that you will personally execute him with your infallible arrow will I reveal the culprit’s name and crime.”Shri Ram once again expressed his resolve. Then Vashishtha explained that Hanuman had committed this crime. Hanuman also confessed. Then Ram announced in his court that tomorrow evening, on the banks of the Sarayu River, he would personally execute Hanuman with his infallible arrow. When Mother Anjani saw Hanumanji in a sad state upon his return home, she was astonished. “Why is my son, the great warrior, the possessor of unparalleled strength and a treasure of knowledge, in this state today?” she asked repeatedly. But when Hanumanji remained silent, she invoked her milk. Then Hanumanji explained that this incident had happened unknowingly. Mother, you know that no one in the entire universe can kill Hanuman, but no one can escape the infallible arrow of Lord Shri Ram. Then Mother said, Hanuman, I received the Ram mantra from Lord Shiva, and I fed this name to you at birth. Hanuman, whose power made you take the sun in your mouth as a child, mistaking it for a fruit. With the name of Rama, no one can harm you even a hair. Even if it’s Rama himself. The power of Rama’s name and the powers of his infallible arrows will pale into insignificance before the power of Rama’s name. Go my son, go to the banks of Saryu and start chanting the name of Ram right now.
Touching the feet of his mother, Hanumanji started chanting Ram Ram Ram Ram on the banks of Saryu. In the evening, Rama returned to the banks of the Sarayu River with his entire court. Everyone was curious as to whether Rama would punish Hanuman. But when Rama repeatedly fired his powerful, infallible arrow, Rambaan, but it had no effect on Hanuman, Guru Vashishtha questioned, “Rama, are you using these arrows with complete devotion?” Then Shri Ram said, “Yes, Gurudev, I am shooting my arrows to punish the Guru for his transgression. How can I commit the same transgression by using any kind of cleverness? So why are your arrows not doing their job?” Then Shri Ram said, “Gurudev, Hanuman is constantly chanting ‘Rama, Rama, Rama’. My powers are fading into insignificance before the power of the name of Rama. Because of this, none of my efforts are succeeding. Please tell me, Gurudev! What should I do?” Gurudev said, “O Ram! From today onwards, I am leaving your court and going with you to my ashram. Where I will continuously chant the name of Ram.”
As he departed, Gurudev Vashishtha declared, “O Ram! I am declaring, knowingly and with conviction, that the name of Rama is greater than Rama himself; the name of Rama is an ocean of great, infallible power.
Whoever chants, writes, and meditates on it, even if his worldly desires are fulfilled, will attain salvation. I have considered the powers of all mantras to be less than the name of Rama. Since then, the name of Rama is considered greater than Rama. Tulsidas says:

“raam bharoso raam bal, raam naam bisvaas!

sumirat subh mangal kusal, maangat tulaseedaas!!”

“Trust in Ram, strength in Ram, faith in the name of Ram!

Remembering him, Tulsidas prays for good luck and well-being!”
