Kothandaramal Temple is a Hindu temple located in the Tiruvarur district of Tamil Nadu, dedicated to Lord Rama, the seventh avatar of Lord Vishnu. The temple is glorified by Maharishi Valmiki and classified as one of the 108 Abhimana Kshethrams of the Vaishnavite tradition. This temple is one among the Pancha Rama Kshethras. All these temples are said to be particular locations mentioned in Ramayana.
Though the presiding deity is Ranganatha and Mother is called as Ranganayaki, the temple is more popular as Rama Temple. The Temple is believed to be 1000 years old.
Sri Rama is in the standing posture with a bow in the left hand and arrow in the right hand.
Sthalapurana
After the Lankan war, when Rama Parivar was returning to Ayodhya, Seetha asked the Lord how She (Mahalakshmi) was influenced by Maya and that too in the presence of Shri Rama. Rama replied that as they had taken human forms, they were susceptible to human failings! Seetha responded saying that she would not once again fall prey to Maya. Rama just snapped his fingers and out came, a beautiful golden deer, which started prancing in front of Seetha. She was totally enchanted by the beautiful deer and asked Rama to fetch it for her!
Sri Rama chased the Golden Deer for some time but he could not capture the Deer. Ultimately he understood that it was the demon (Mareecha) and he decided to kill that Deer.Sri Rama said “Tham hanthum Kirutha Nichchaya Hatham Bar” means sure I will kill you Deer. This saying is the reason for the village is called as Hathambar which later became “Adambar”.
Sri Rama navami, Sri Hanuman Jayanthi, Vaikunta Ekadasi and Navaratri days are considered as significant days here. Special pooja are being performed on these days to Sri Kothanda Rama and other deities of this temple.
