According to legends, at that time the main stream of the holy river Ganga used to pass through here. King Vanasura used to come to this place and perform penance on the banks of river Ganga. After a few years of penance, he decided to perform a Mahayagya here. The Havan Kund started being dug for the Yagya. During this digging, the shovel of the workers hit a stone and blood started flowing from it. This information was given to Vanasura. A blood stained stone was taken out and kept outside which was in the shape of Shivalinga. It is said that Lord Shiva appeared in his dream during the night and ordered him to establish this blood-stained Shivalinga. It was established by Vanasura on the orders of God. Since this Linga was found during the excavation of Havan Kund, it was named Kundeshwar Shiva.
