Located near the Jagannath Temple, the Lakshmi Temple is a small and beautiful shrine that draws people’s attention in large numbers every year due to its historical significance. It features a presiding deity of the goddess Lakshmi who is also considered to be the deity of wealth and happiness.
According to legends, the goddess Lakshmi invited Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi to this place after their marriage to have a meal with her. Since then, there is a belief among the locals that the presiding deity blesses married women in abundance and fulfills everyone’s wish whoever worships her with full faith and dedication.
It would be worth noting that the Lakshmi Temple was constructed by the Hoysala Empire King in traditional Hindu style of architecture and has the idol of Lakshmi that traces its history back to 5000 to 6000 years old. The deity is made of gemstone and weighs about 40 kg.
Diwali is celebrated at Lakshmi Temple with great pomp. At this time of the year, the shrine is decorated with colorful lights and flowers, making it look extraordinary from the other temples in Puri.
