Temple administrator and priest Pt. Gaurishankar Pandey says that the temple is quite old. There are many stories behind its establishment.A saint lived here, he was a worshiper of Lord Shiva. It is said that he used to go to Kashi (Varanasi) every day to have darshan of Baba Vishwanath. When he grew old, he started facing difficulty in going to Kashi. Once he told Baba that God, I can no longer walk. Make such arrangements that you can have darshan in Prayag itself. One day he saw that a Shivlinga was lying there, which he consecrated and started worshiping it in the form of Loknath. The second story is that Adi Shankaracharya had installed Shivalinga here.

The Shivling established here is like that of Baba Vishwanath of Kashi.
Priest Gaurishankar Pandey tells that just as the Shivlinga is in Baba Vishwanath temple in Kashi, similar Shivlinga is in Baba Loknath temple.This temple was very small earlier. This chamber-like temple had become quite dilapidated, so with the cooperation of the local people, it was renovated in the year 2007 and the idols of some more gods and goddesses were installed. Apart from Baba Shiva, Lord Shri Ganesh, Ram-Janaki, Maa Durga, Sheshnath, Shri Radha-Krishna are also seen in the temple. The form of Sheshnag here is also the statue of Sheshnag installed in the Patalpuri temple established in Akbar’s fort on the banks of the Sangam. Both the statues are said to be quite ancient.

The Shivalinga established in the Loknath temple is offered only milk and sweets. With this Baba Bholenath becomes happy and fulfills the wishes of the devotees. According to the priest, Baba is very pleased with the devotee who visits Baba continuously for 41 days and makes offerings of milk and sweets and fulfills all his wishes.

Special makeup and Bhandara is done on Shivratri and other festivals.
Special adornment of Baba is done on Shivratri, Basant Panchami, Monday of Sawan and Navratri. During these days there is a huge crowd of devotees here. Apart from ear piercing and shaving, Rudrabhishek is also performed here. Devotees also organize Bhandara on festivals but due to less space near the temple, it is organized at Loknath Dharamshala. Every day of Shivratri, a procession of Shiva starts from Loknath Gymnasium which passes through Loknath Temple. The temple remains open for devotees to visit from 5.50 am to 12.30 pm and from 5 pm to 10 pm.
