Lord Shri Krishna Himself sent nectar, but why did a sage refuse to accept it?

Share

After beholding the cosmic form of Lord Shri Krishna, all of Sage Uttanka’s delusions were dispelled. He sought forgiveness from the Lord and bowed at His feet.
Pleased, Lord Shri Krishna said,
“O noble sage, I am delighted by your devotion and penance. Ask for a boon.”

Sage Uttanka humbly said,
“Lord, it is extremely difficult to find water in the desert where I perform penance. Whenever I feel thirsty, may water be made available through Your grace.”

Lord Shri Krishna smiled and said,
“So be it. Your thirst will certainly be quenched at the right time.”
Some time later, Sage Uttanka was wandering through the desert. His body was exhausted by the scorching rays of the sun, and he was overcome by intense thirst.

He closed his eyes and meditated upon Lord Shri Krishna.

At that very moment, a Chandala appeared before him. He was accompanied by a few dogs and held a vessel filled with water in his hand.

He said respectfully,
“O noble sage, you appear to be very thirsty. Please
accept this water.”
When Sage Uttanka beheld his appearance, a sense of hesitation arose in his mind.

He thought,
“I am an ascetic Brahmin. How can I drink water from the hands of a Chandala?”

He rejected the man’s offer.
The Chandala urged him again,
“O Sage, this is no ordinary water. Please accept it.”

But Sage Uttanka remained steadfast in his decision.
In a few moments, that Chandala vanished from the spot.
Just then, Lord Shri Krishna appeared before him.

The sage said,
“Lord! You had promised to give me water. Why, then, was my thirst not quenched?”

Lord Shri Krishna replied in a calm voice,
“O noble sage, I had kept my word. I had personally asked Indra to bring the nectar for you. However, Indra assumed the guise of a Chandala so that you could also be put to the test.”

“You rejected it based on its outward appearance. In reality, it was not mere water, but *Amrit* (the nectar of immortality).”
Upon hearing this, Sage Uttanka felt deeply ashamed. Tears of remorse began to flow from his eyes.

He said,
“Lord, I judged based on outward appearances. I failed

Your test.”
Consoling him, Lord Shri Krishna said,
“He who acknowledges his mistake is a true seeker.”

Then, the Lord blessed them, saying,
“From this day forth, whenever you need water in the desert, special clouds will appear and bring rain.”
It is said that these very clouds came to be known as “Uttank Megh.”

Moral

A person’s worth is not defined by their attire, caste, appearance, or external identity. God may test us at any time and in any form; therefore, one should treat everyone with respect and equality.

God often sends help in a form we are unwilling to accept. Thus, learn to recognize the inner spirit rather than the outward appearance.
