Reva. There are many forms of Shiva. One of those forms is Mahamrityunjaya. It is said that by worshiping this form and chanting the mantra, every calamity is averted. This form of Lord Bholenath is present in the fort of Rewa state. In the month of Sawan, people from all over the state come here for darshan, people from Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Bihar also come with wishes. Stopping here, Mahamrityunjaya Mantra is chanted and rituals are performed.
This is the only temple in the world where the Mahamrityunjaya form of Bholenath can be seen. Akal is a temple that provides relief from premature death, disease and every calamity. Although Lord Bholenath has three eyes, but the Shivalinga present here has not three but a thousand eyes (holes). The color of Shivalinga is white which changes according to the season. According to Shiv Purana, Lord Bholenath had originated the Mahasanjeevani Mahamrityunjaya Mantra. This mantra is chanted here by the priests. There is a fair like atmosphere here on Mahashivratri, Monday of Sawan and Basant Panchami, Makar Sankranti. Shiva devotees come here every year. Most of the businessmen, doctors, engineers, officers, public representatives and common people living in the city start their daily routine by taking darshan in the morning.
There is a legend regarding the establishment of the temple that the king had come from Bandhavgarh for hunting. While hunting, the king saw a lion chasing a chital. When he came near the temple, the lion returned without hunting the chital. The king was surprised to see this. It is said that the king got the excavation done. A white Shivalinga emerged from the sanctum sanctorum of Lord Mahamrityunjaya.
Raja Bhav Singh had built the temple
It is said that when Maharaja Vikramaditya shifted his capital from Bandhavgarh to Rewa, he built the fort. At that time this temple was in the platform. Which was later given the shape of a grand temple by Maharaja Bhav Singh. The king of Rewa state used to worship here in the morning and evening. People also flocked to have darshan. The Ram Baraat, which has been going on for centuries, begins with the worship of Lord Mahamrityunjaya. Lord Jagannath Rath Yatra originates from Laxmanbagh and definitely comes here.
