Nagnechya Mata Temple – Jodhpur

The temple of Nagnechya Mata is located in Nagana village of Jodhpur district in the Indian state of Rajasthan.Nagnechya Mata Temple holds a special place in Hinduism. Nagnechaya Mata was the family goddess of the Rathore ruler of Jodhpur. Even today in Jodhpur many families are worshiped in the form of Kul Devi.

Nagnechya Mata is known as Chakreshwari, Ratheshwari Mata. This temple is situated at a distance of about 96 kilometers from Jodhpur. According to ancient religious and historical texts, Rao Dhuhad (Vikram Samvat 1349–1366), grandson of Rao Sinha (founder of the Rathore kingdom in Marwar) first installed the idol of this goddess and built the temple.Rao Dhuhad or Rao Dhuhar brought sculpture of Nagnechi Maa . He bought this sculpture from Karnataka state of India between 1295-1305. A Temple was made at Nagaana for Nagnechi Maa.

The eighteen-armed Goddess ‘Nagnechi’ is the form of ‘Mahishmardini’. Her symbol is ‘eagle’ which can be seen on the flags of Marwar (Jodhpur), Bikaner and Kishangarh principalities. The Goddess Nagnechi Devi was the Kuldevi of Jodhpur principality. Since the dwelling place of this Goddess was believed to be under Neem tree, hence the tree of Neem was favored in Jodhpur and its wood was not used.

History

Rao Dhuhad had gone to his maternal grandmother’s house in his childhood. He got stung by some words of his maternal uncle, due to which Rao Dhuhad had decided to bring the idol of his Kuldevi. Rao Dhuhad did not know who is his Kuldevi? Where is his/her statue? To please the goddess, to answer all these questions, he did penance and the goddess was pleased with the penance of a child.Devi told Rao Dhuhad that your Kuldevi is Chakreshwari Mata. The idol of Chakreshwari Devi is in Karnataka. So Raja Rao Dhuhad went to Karnataka state and brought the idol of Chakreshwari which was his Kuldevi.

The temple is carved beautifully in marble and Mata’s murti is very pleasant. Beautiful metal murals inside behind Matas idol catches the attention.

During Navaratri and Dussehra huge masses come to the temple to worship the Goddess.
