NILKANTH MANDIR CHAINPUR, BIHAR
Chainpur is a village located 10 km away from the district headquarters in Saharsa district of Bihar. This village is famous in the entire Mithila region for its education and scholars.
Shri Bhagirath Thakur is considered to be the founder of this village and the people of the village consider themselves to be the descendants of Bhagirath Thakur. According to traditional belief, Bhagirath Baba came to this village about 250 years ago. There is also a belief that this village is very ancient. There is a legend that when Shankaracharya came to Mahishi to debate with Mandan Mishra in the eighth century, he passed through Chainpur. After worshipping at the Neelkanth Mahadev temple in Chainpur village, he crossed the Dhemra river (Dharmmoola) and reached Mahishi. This story is probably available in a treatise called Shankar Vijay. Also, many ancient statues have been found in this village. All of them are unique such as the life size statue of Lord Surya and the statue of Lord Vishnu. It is said that Baba Basukinath resides in the Chainpur Neelkanth temple for two hours. The wishes of all the devotees who come here are fulfilled.
