History
In ancient times, once King Sahasra Bahu reached that ashram while hunting. In the absence of the sage, Renuka treated the king with full respect by the grace of Kamdhonu cow. The king wanted to take that wonderful cow away from there by force. But he could not succeed in doing so.In the end, the king, in anger, forcefully took Renuka with him to his palace in Hastinapur and locked her in the room. As soon as the queen got the opportunity, she freed Renuka from her younger sister. Renuka came back and narrated the whole story to the sage. But the sage ordered Renuka to leave the ashram because she stayed in another man’s palace one night. Renuka repeatedly prayed to her husband that she was completely pure and would not leave the ashram. If they don’t believe then they should kill him with their own hands. So that she can attain salvation by dying at the hands of her husband. But the sage remained firm on his orders.
Thereafter the sage asked his three sons to behead their mother, but his sons refused. The fourth son Parashuram, considering his father’s order as his duty, beheaded his mother. Later, Parshuram ji was deeply affected by this, he started doing severe penance at a short distance and installed a Shivalinga there and started worshiping it.Pleased with his penance, Ashutosh Lord Shiva appeared before him and asked him to ask for a boon. Lord Parashurama prayed to revive his mother. Lord Shiva brought his mother back to life and also gave him an axe, and said that whenever you use it during war, you will be victorious.
Parshuram ji started living in a hut in the nearby forest. After a few days, Parashuram ji killed King Sahastrabahu along with his entire army with his axe. He was very angry due to the misdeeds of the then Kshatriyas, hence he gave death sentence to the Kshatriyas on the earth and made the entire earth devoid of Kshatriyas twenty-one times. A temple was also built at the place where Shivalinga was established.Over time the temple turned into ruins. After a long time, one day when the queen of Landaura went out for a walk, her elephant came and stopped there. Despite the great efforts of the mahout, the elephant did not move from there, then the queen ordered the soldiers to dig the place. During the excavation, a Shivlinga was revealed on which the queen built a temple. This Shivlinga and the temple built on it is today famous by the name of Parshurameshwar Temple.
Jagadguru Shankaracharya Swami Krishna Bodh Ashram Ji Maharaj also performed penance at this holy place, and with his compassion, Puramahadev Mahadev Committee was also formed which runs this temple.
