Sri Prathyangira Devi Temple is located at Sholinganallur, Chennai.The Temple sits on the banks of the Buckingham Canal. This is a magnificent temple built for Goddess Prathyangira, in her incarnation of Shri Maha Prathyangira Devi. She is considered to be a powerful repellent of the influences generated by witchcraft, and is said to have the power to punish Adharma.
It is the first exclusive temple for Prathyangira Devi, founded by Sri Prathyangira Swamigal (Sri Atharvana Vedha Sri Peedathipathi, Sri Garuda Kuhha). Prathyangira Devi blesses her devotees here in the Shantha form.
The Raja Gopuram, built as per Vaastu, is very impressive. Devotees can worship Varahi, Neela Saraswathi, Kalikambal, Ganesha, Muruga, Agni, Narasimha, Anjaneya, Shiva, Guruvayurappa, Saneeswara, Rahu, and Ketu in their respective sanctums.
Devotees can worship the main deity Pratyangira Devi, sitting in a sukhasana posture, keeping her right leg on a roaring lion. She holds a shoolam in her right hand that indicates the removal of fear and obstacles in her devotees’ life.
Legend of Prathyangira Devi Temple
There are different legends and origins behind Maha Prathyangira Devi. A few say that she emerged from the third eye of Sarabheswarar (manifestation of Shiva) in the form of a lion and human with 2016 hands, 1008 lion faces, and a blood-spilling, protruding tongue. Her lion and human form symbolizes the balance between good and evil. She is associated with Sri Chakra.
Some legends describe that Parvati Devi, Saraswati Devi, and Lakshmi Devi created Prathyangira Devi to appease the fierce Narasimha after he destroyed the demon king, Hiranyakashipu. When she sat on his thigh, he calmed down.
Other ancient texts say that when two Rishis, Prathyangira and Angiras, were meditating, a nameless goddess appeared through a Moola Mantram. Later she privileged both Rishis by naming herself after them. Since then, she has been called “Prathyangira Devi.”
Navaratri days, Onam and other festivals are celebrated in Prathyangira Devi Temple. On Amavasya (no moon day), Poornima (full moon day), and Sundays, special Yagyas and Poojas are done to ward off evil eyes and bad spirits.

She is considered to be a powerful repellent of the influences generated by witchcraft, and is said to have the power to punish Adharma. This is one of the few temples of Prathyangira and the only temple for Shri Maha Prathyangira Devi, the Shanta form.

Other Gods who are also shrined in the renowned temple are Goddess Varahi, Goddess Neela Saraswathi, Lord Sarabheswara, Lord Ganesha, Lord Muruga, Lord Panjamukha Anjaneya, Lord Agni, Goddess Kaalikaambal, Lord Ayyapa, Lord Saniswara, Lord Narasimha, Lord Rahu and Ketu, Lord (Guruvayoorappan) and Lord Shiva.
Timing: 8 am – 12 pm and 4 pm – 7:45 pm on weekdays, Sunday from 8 am – 1 pm and 4 pm to 8:30 pm (Only on Ammavasai).

Homas are performed in the temple on special occasions only and it is conducted for free and any-one can participate, there is no agent or pre-booking for homam in this temple within India or in any other countries but there are scammers who pretend as agent for homams but they are no way related to this temple, homam are performed for public welfare and it is free to all.

The temple is located close to the junction and halfway down the link road of East Coast Road and Old Mahabalipuram Road.
