Gurudeva was born on January 5, 1927 in Oakland, CA. In 1947 he travelled to India and Sri Lanka on tour with a cultural exchange dance group. In Northern Sri Lanka he met and was initiated into sannyasa by Jnanaguru Yogaswami of Jaffna, Sri Lanka (1872-1964). Yogaswami sent his young disciple back to America to “build bridges between the East and the West.”

On returning to America in March 1950, Gurudeva travelled around the country, teaching yoga and dance in Arizona, Colorado and California, following Yogaswami’s instructions to wait until the age of thirty to begin his mission. He spent the next seven years in contemplation and inner pursuits. He found greater responsiveness to the Eastern teachings in San Francisco.

A divine, beautiful and medium sized temple. Abode are Pillayar, Thamizh Kadavul Lord Murugan, Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati and Navagraha.

One of the oldest temples in the Bay Area, dedicated to Lord Muruga. Spiritual and Divine Experience, when visiting. The garba gruha or main deity is decorated and adorned with flowers and jewelry on special occasions. The Annual Thai Poosam Walk is becoming popular in recent years thanks to the large Indian community presence in the Bay Area. Devotees walk 20 miles or 8 miles (from San Ramon / Walnut Creek) on Thai Poosam (Murugan’s Birth Star) Day.
