Shree Upshanteshwar Mahadev Mandir Ghasi Tola, Varanasi

Share

Upshanteshwar Mahadev

Goddess Parvati requested Lord Shiva to describe the various Tirthas (sacred ponds/lakes) and deities of Kashi. Lord Shiva told him that all the Lingas hold the divine powers of the Tirthas.

Lord Shiva has described the divine powers of Bhadreshwar. There is Up Shanteshwar Linga in the north-east direction of Bhadreshwar. Just by touching this Linga the devotee attains ultimate mental peace. By worshiping this Upa Shanta Linga, the devotee’s long accumulated sins are washed away. (Kashi Volume Chapter 97)

In Up Shanteshwar the pronunciation of “u” is “u” in put.

temple location

This temple is situated at House No. CK.2/4, Patani Tola, Bhosala Ghat, Varanasi. One can go to the Chowk in a cycle rickshaw and can reach this place on foot via Sankata Devi Temple (famous site). Another famous landmark is the Gangamahal Bhawan. Alternatively, devotees can reach Bhosala Ghat by boat and climb the stairs.

types of worship

The temple is open from 06.00 am to 9.00 pm. Unlike many other temples in Kashi, devotees in this temple are not allowed inside the sanctum sanctorum. This is different from what is mentioned in the Kashi Khanda in which people were allowed to touch the Shiva Linga. According to the old time people, the Linga is considered very powerful and perhaps for this reason, now devotees are not allowed to touch the Linga.

While regular pujas are performed by the priest, special pujas are performed on important days like Shivratri and some Ekadashis. Aarti is performed every morning, afternoon and night.
