Gadhpahra Fort, witness to the first freedom struggle, 400 year old temple of Bajrang Bali situated here, fair is organized in Ashadh.

This fort contains within itself a history of about 900 years. Especially it was the main center of activities of freedom fighters. Most of the fort is dilapidated, but the 400 year old Hanuman temple located in the fort is still established, which is the center of faith for the people not only of Bundelkhand but also of the neighboring states. In this temple of Hanuman, a special fair is organized on every Tuesday of Ashadh and thousands of devotees arrive.

Where is Gadhpahra Fort located: Gadhpahra Fort is situated at a distance of about 11 kilometers from Sagar city on the Sagar-Jhansi road. While this fort has been preserved as a monument of national importance by the Archaeological Department of India, on the other hand the Ministry of Tourism of the Government of India also looks after the fort. This fort, situated on the left side of the road while going from Sagar to Jhansi, is built on a huge hill.It is said that there were 2 gates of the fort, the first gate was towards the sea from where one can enter the temple and the fort. The second one is towards Jhansi which is now almost destroyed. The special thing is that even though the fort has reached a dilapidated state, there is still a Hanuman temple on the right side of the entrance of the fort. It is said that there is a self-made idol of Hanumanji for which the Dangi kings had built a temple 400 years ago.

Historical importance of the fort: Not much clear information is available about the construction of the fort, but according to historical evidence, this fort was under the rule of Gaur king Sangram Singh and Garhphara had an important place among the 52 forts of Gaur kings. There were 360 ​​maunjas under its control. Then this fort was captured by Dangi kings.Historian Dr. Bharat Shukla tells that “Fort Sheeshmahal and Hanuman ji’s temple were built here around 1620 AD, which is about 400 years old. A huge fair is held here every year on Tuesday of Ashadh. It is believed that This is a very proven place and every wish of the devotees coming here is fulfilled. In 1689, this fort came under the control of Mughal rule and then the Marathas captured the fort.

Importance of the fort related to the first freedom struggle: Dr. Bharat Shukla explains that “In the revolution of 1857, the then king of Garhpahra fort was Mardan Singh, he led the rebellion from this fort. He along with Raja Bakhatbali Shah of Shahgarh, attacked Jhansi. Had helped the queen a lot and fought fiercely against the British. Although both these kings were defeated by the British army and had to surrender, but both the kings fought fiercely against the British.

Special significance of Tuesday of Ashadh: A huge fair is organized on the day of Tuesday of Ashadh at Garhpahra Hanuman Temple, which is one of the major religious places of Bundelkhand. Apart from Madhya Pradesh and Bundelkhand, this temple is famous far and wide due to the presence of a military cantonment near the fort. It is said that this is the proven area of ​​Lord Hanuman and whatever wish a devotee makes with a true heart by performing special puja on the Tuesday of Ashadh, it is definitely fulfilled.
