Someshwar Mahadev Temple/Someshwar Gadhi Madi,Chitwan,Nepal
Someshwar Gadhi, also known as the Someshwar Temple, stands as a prominent symbol of Hindu faith and cultural heritage. Located in the heart of Madi, this historical site attracts a large number of local and international tourists daily, making it one of the top tourist and picnic destinations in Nepal.
Historical significance
Built by King Mukunda Sen of Palpa, Someshwar Gadhi served as a strategic fort to defend against British invasions. This site, perched on the highest peak along the Nepal-India border, holds great historical value. Over the years, artifacts such as weapons, utensils, and stone figures have been unearthed here, revealing its rich past.
Originally known as Someshwar Parbat, the fort played a crucial role during the Nepal-British war. Although it was initially fortified to resist British forces, logistical challenges, including water scarcity, led the Nepalese army to relocate to Upardangadhi. The fort also served as a vital trade route between Nepal and India during the Licchavi dynasty.
