Sri Karunakara Perumal Temple (Thiru Kaaragam) -Kanchipuram

Sri Karunakara Perumal Temple Kanchipuram is revered as one of the 108 Divya Desam Temple of Lord Vishnu , situated in Kanchipuram. Sri Karunakara Perumal temple is within the Thiru Ooragam (Ulagalantha Perumal) Temple.Sri Ulagalantha Perumal Kovil has the significance that this temple enshrines three Divya Desams – Thiruneeragam,  Thirukkaragam, and Thirukaravanam in its precinct.

 

The Moolavar of this Sthalam is Sri Karunakara Perumal. He is found in standing position facing his thirumugham towards South direction (direction that belongs to the cool breeze). The Lord is giving his seva on facing South direction, which is said to be the direction that belongs to the cool breeze. He is found along with Padmamani Naachiyaar also known as Ramamani Thayar.

 

Legend

 

As per Hindu legend, sage Garga performed his penance at Sri Karunakara Perumal temple and obtained knowledge. The place thus derived its name Garagaham, which later became Kaaragam.

Lord is explaining to the world that he is the Megham (Clouds) which brings rain to this world to enrich the wealth of the world. Without expecting any return, the clouds give the rain to the world. Since, Karunakara Perumal resembles as Kaar, the clouds, he doesn’t expects anything from his bhaktas but he only the pure Bhakthi from them. Since, the Perumal is not expecting from anything but only, the pure Bhakthi and show Karunai (Courtesy), the Perumal is called “Karunakara Perumal”.

 

Brahmotsavam, Vamana Jayanthi, Navaratri, Vaikunta Ekadashi are the festivals grandly celebrated in this temple.

 

The Lord is believed to be a great healer. There is a belief that worshipping him can cure all diseases, including mental disorders, nervous disabilities, skin ailments, speech impairment, etc. He can also clear distress and worries, and help people lead a life of health and happiness.
