Surya Kund located in Gorakhpur is one of the 26 Surya Kunds of the country, where Lord Ram rested.
Suryakund Dham is one of the 26 historical and mythological Suryakund Dhams. Apart from Delhi, Haryana, Yamunotri, Bahraich, Bihar, Ayodhya, only Suryakund in Gorakhpur has such a pond. It is believed that its water never dries up.
Suryakund Dham is one of the ancient heritages of the city. The Suryakund located in the city is also one of the 26 mythological Suryakunds of the country. It is believed that in 1458, Raja Mansingh had built this Suryakund for the worship of Lord Surya and other gods and goddesses. Which is now famous for the name of Suryakund Dham.
If we talk about mythological belief, Lord Shri Ram had rested in Suryakund during his visit to the state. The next morning he took bath in the lake, made a pinda and invoked the Sun God. When Suryadev appeared, Shri Ram gifted him a lamp. For this reason the name of this lake became Suryakund Sarovar. Since then, the tradition of celebrating Deepotsav is going on here every year on the next day of Diwali.

Myth: Water never dries

Suryakund Dham is one of the 26 historical and mythological Suryakund Dhams. Apart from Delhi, Haryana, Yamunotri, Bahraich, Bihar, Ayodhya, only Suryakund in Gorakhpur has such a pond. It is believed that its water never dries up. Suryakund is mentioned in Valmiki Ramayana as ‘Karupath‘. It is believed that during the Mahabharata period it was known as Gopalak. Here one gets special virtuous benefits from the festival of lights. Lord Surya fulfills all the wishes of the devotees.
Beautification has been done at a cost of approximately Rs 3 crores.
The Tourism Department has beautified Suryakund Dham at a cost of approximately Rs 3 crore. With this, works like RCC retaining wall, RCC boundary wall, red stone and MS gate, seating benches, solar lights, landscaping tourist shelter, concept based stone pillars, urinals, campus drain, pathway and signage have been done.
Deepotsav takes place on the next day of Diwali
According to mythological tradition, Deepotsav is organized at Suryakund Dham on the next day of Diwali. Officials of Sanskar Bharati illuminate this ghat with more than 30 thousand lamps on the next day of Diwali. Along with this, a Shramdaan program is organized here every week by Suryakund Dham Vikas Samiti.

In this, a large number of local people gather and clean the lake and the Dham complex. Along with this, weekly Ganga Aarti is also organized at the lake by the Suryakund Dham Renovation Committee.
