Tambdi Jogeshwari Temple -Pune

Tambdi Jogeshwari Temple is supposed to be the oldest one located in Budhwar Peth in Pune which was formed around the swayambhu idol by , Trimbak Bendre in 1545 A.D. Original temple was small one and surrounded by farms, being the Gram Devata the temple was situated at the border of village Pune.

Later in 1636 when Shivaji came to Pune to stay, with his mother Jijabai and his mentor Dadoji Konddev, sought the blessings of Devi and ploughed the land in front of mandir with Golden plough , signifying the new beginning for Pune. It is believed that a Deepmal was erected where the ploughing was started and one where the ploughing was ended. That time the temple was surrounded by fields and small water current was flowing near the temple which was called as Ambil Odha.

The slaying of Tambrasur had given goddess Jogeshwari the name Tambdi Jogeshwari. She sits in a beautiful temple built in the old style which is also known as a Panchayatan temple with four more temples surrounding it.Since the colour of the idol of Jogeshwari is red, it is called Tambdi (red in Marathi) Jogeshwari.

Peshwas were used to seek blessings of Devi for their every new missions. The wives of Peshwas were regular devotees of the Devi. On the Day of Dusshera , the Peshwas and their sardars like Holkar, Shitole, Devaskar used to perform Pooja and then there used to be a miravnook (procession) of Devi in palakhi. The tradition of Devi’s Dusshera miravnook still exists today.

The temple still follows the old tradition of ‘oti bharane’ where sari, coconut, kumkum, rice, green bangles are offered to the goddess while women apply haldi to the forehead and offer a gold coin to the goddess.
