The tradition of offering Durva to Lord Ganesha

A very interesting story related to Nandi dates back to a dice game played between Shiva and Parvati in ancient times.

Parvati won the game, but a dispute arose, forcing Nandi to be called in as arbitrator. To everyone’s surprise, Nandi declared Lord Shiva the winner. This decision of Nandi enraged Goddess Parvati, and she cursed Nandi with a terrible disease.
Realizing his mistake, Nandi humbly apologized and admitted that he had made this decision due to his unwavering devotion and loyalty.

He could not bear to see his master lose.

Maa Parvati’s heart was moved by Nandi’s devotion, and she decided to lift the curse, but on one condition. She told Nandi that on the next Chaturdashi, he would have to offer his most precious possession to Lord Ganesha.

With complete faith and devotion, Nandi offered Lord Ganesha the green Durva grass, the mainstay of his life. Lord Ganesha gladly accepted this offering, and Nandi’s curse was lifted. From then until today, the tradition of offering Durva to Lord Ganesha continues to be followed to seek devotion and blessings.

When Goddess Parvati whispers something into Nandi’s ear, it symbolizes devotion and faith.
Nandi, who is Lord Shiva’s loyal gatekeeper and messenger, becomes the medium to convey Goddess Parvati’s prayers and wishes directly to Mahadev.

It depicts the eternal relationship between the devotee and the Lord, with Nandi being the bridge to reach “Mahadev.” This immortal tale conveys a divine message of devotion, love, loyalty and forgiveness, reflecting the eternal relationship between Shiva, Parvati, Nandi and Ganesha.
