The Valmiki Ramayana mentions the science of dreams, and today we’re going to tell you about an incident related to this. When Ravana appointed a rakshasi to guard Mother Sita, let’s explore what she saw in her dreams related to the destruction of Lanka and Ravana.

There are many untold stories from the Ramayana that very few people know. Today, we’re going to tell you about one such incident. After Sita’s abduction, she spent every moment of her life in the Ashoka Vatika in Lanka, mourning the loss of her beloved Lord Rama. Ravana had posted a demoness named Trijata to guard her in the Ashoka Vatika in Lanka. Although a demoness, she possessed both wisdom and human qualities.

Trijata was born a demon, but she also inherited some of her father Vibhishana’s qualities, including devotion to Rama, and understood Mother Sita’s grief. Trijata was the oldest of all the demonesses there. Once, when she woke up, she told the demonesses living there that the end of Ravana and Lanka was near. She had seen this in her dream. This dream also hints at the scriptures. Let’s find out what Trijata revealed about her dream.

The 27th chapter of the Sundarkand of the Valmiki Ramayana describes Trijata’s dream.

Trijata was the daughter of Vibhishana, appointed by Ravana to guard Sita. In her sleep, she tells the other night-dwellers, “I have had a very terrifying dream. It will bring about the destruction of the demons and the victory of Lord Rama.”

Trijata revealed that she had seen Shri Ram, Mother Janaki, and Lakshmana traveling north in a divine Pushpak Vimana. Trijata then said, “I also saw Ravana in my dream. He was shaved, bathed in oil, wearing a garland of Karveer flowers, lying on the ground from the Pushpak Vimana. Then I saw him riding a donkey and traveling south.” I also saw Kumbhakarna in the same condition. But Vibhishana was the only one I saw in auspicious state, wearing clean clothes. I saw Lanka submerged in the sea, its entrance gates broken. I also saw in my dream that one of Rama’s messengers, disguised as a monkey, had burned Lanka to ashes.

Hearing this, all the night-walkers trembled with fear, then Trijata said, if you want to do penance, then come to the shelter of Mother Janaki and ask for forgiveness from her and bow to her, she will forgive you and free you from this terrible suffering.

Trijata then tells the demons guarding Lanka, “It seems to me that all of Mother Janaki’s wishes are now being fulfilled. Ravana’s destruction and Shri Ram’s ultimate victory are now certain.”
