History of Bairaskund Mahadev Chamoli Garhwal

Bairaskund Mahadev (Vikas Nagar Ghat Chamoli) The temple of Bairaskund Mahadev, the Tapo Bhoomi of Ravana, is situated near Vikas Nagar Ghat. This temple is situated on a hill. There is an ancient temple of Mahadev Shiva here, which has been worshiped for centuries.  According to the stories, Ravana, a great devotee of Shiva, had performed unbroken penance for Mahadev Shiva in Tretayuga. This place is also mentioned in religious texts like Ravana Samhita and Kedarkhand Shastra etc. Mention of this temple started from Tretayuga itself. Even today, a large number of devotees stand in queue to have darshan of Mahadev Shiva. There is also a pond in front of the temple, which has a lot of water. According to the stories, when Mahadev Shiva did not appear to Ravana even after Ravana performed severe penance, Ravana worshiped Shiva at this very place by chanting ‘Shivtandav’ and pleased him by offering his ten heads to Shiva. At this place, the ten places where Ravana placed his head are called Dasmoli.
