AMRITESHWAR

Once upon a time there lived a householder sage (one who leads a normal family life) named Shanaru in Kashi. He followed all the prayer rules prescribed in Sanatan Dharma. He used to perform Brahma Yagya, Linga Puja and all related rituals every day.

One day his son, Upajangini, was playing in the nearby forest, where he was bitten by a snake and the boy’s body became inactive. Completely grief-stricken by the death of his son, the sage brought the body to a place near Swarga Dwar in Kashi which was near the Mahashamshan (cremation ground). They placed the boy in a mound of soil and began to consider the next course of action regarding cremation.

Little did they know that under the ground there was a small linga whose shape and size was similar to that of a gooseberry. Shivalinga was so powerful that its light woke up Upjangini, a child who was declared dead, from deep sleep. The sage was very surprised to see what had happened. At that very moment, a snake passed through the muddy field carrying a dead insect in its mouth. As soon as the dead worm came in contact with the muddy area, it came to life.

The sage was surprised that there must be something in that muddy area which contained Amrita Sanjeevani (nectar capable of conquering death). He started digging the soil and found a small linga which was the size of a gooseberry. The sage immediately took out the Shiva Linga from the mud and after following all the rituals, ceremoniously installed the Shiva Linga. Then he started worshiping Shiva Linga which he named Amriteshwar.

According to Chapter 94 of the Kashi Khanda, devotees who touch the Amriteshwar Linga attain immortality (victory over death). Shiva Linga is said to be so powerful that it even brings dead people back to life. It is also said that those who worship Amriteshwar have no fear of rebirth.

Furthermore, in Chapter 73 of the Kashi Khand, Lord Shiva tells Goddess Parvati about the fourteen powerful Shiva Lingas in Kashi that are capable of granting salvation to the devotees. Amriteshwar is the first among the fourteen Lingas described by Lord Shiva.

Amriteshwar is located at CK.33/28, Neelkanth, Bacha Maharaj Ganga Putra House. From Neelkantheshwar devotees will turn left (towards eastern direction) and after walking a few yards, they will reach a Kali temple. Amriteshwar is right in front of Kali temple. People can travel by rickshaw to the square and can walk to this place. This temple is located close to the Adi Chunchangiri Mahasansthan branch monastery of Karnataka.

Amriteshwari Devi is also situated in this place of worship, whose mention is found in Chapter 70 of Kashi Khand.
