Firozpur Mahadev Temple is the center of faith of millions.
Hastinapur and the surrounding land are hiding historical treasures. It also houses the historic Firozpur Mahadev Temple established by Durvasa Rishi. It is still without a roof. It is the center of faith of millions of people.
Firozpur Mahadev Temple is situated 12 kilometers away from Hastinapur, the capital of Kaurava-Pandavas. It was established by sage Durvasa. He used to do penance here. During the Mahabharata war, Kunti and Gandhari had come here to seek the blessings of Vijayashree for their sons. It is believed that those who come to Mahadev temple do not get disappointed. A huge Kanwar fair is held in this temple twice a year. Thousands of devotees come from every corner of the country and perform Jalabhishek. Legend has it that when the rule of the Mughals was established, the Shivalinga of the Firozpur Mahadev Temple had become extinct in the bushes. Firozpur village was the landlord of Syed Haider Ali. The village cowherds used to go near this temple to graze their cows. A calf came out of the herd of cows and went among the bushes. This happened for several days and the cowherds chased him. They were stunned to see this. A stream of milk is falling on Shivalinga from the udder of the heifer. Its discussion reached landlord Haider Ali. He sent laborers to dig stones.
It is said that the more digging was done, the more the stone sank down. The workers informed the landlord. On this Haider himself arrived and asked the workers to break the stones. The workers could not succeed in this. Haider Ali then gave instructions to cut it with a saw. After the abolition of the zamindar system, Hyder Ali left the village. The priest told that after a few months, a person from the village heard a voice in his dream that he should wake up in the morning, take a bath in the Ganga and perform Jalabhishek on Shivling. At that time Ganga used to flow near Ramraj. Since then, Jalabhishek is taking place at Firozpur Mahadev Temple. A huge Kanwar fair is held here in Sawan and Phalgun.
There is also a legend that till date the temple has not been roofed. The priest of the temple said that many attempts have been made to put the roof on, but some or the other hurdles arise.
