Although there are many famous Shiva temples in Kanpur, but one of them is Vankhandeshwar Temple located on P Road. Whose history is several hundred years old. It is said that an ancient Shivalinga was found here during excavation. People come here from far and wide to visit in the month of Sawan.
Vankhandeshwar Temple situated on P Road remains the center of faith of the devotees as one of the major Shiva temples in the city as well as the surrounding districts. In the month of Shravan, the Lord is worshiped in the temple with proper adornment throughout the day. In the court of Mahadev, hundreds of devotees offer offerings to the Lord and distribute them to the needy. Due to its location in the center of the city, devotees from all over the city and surrounding districts come here for darshan.
History of the temple: The history of Vankhandeshwar temple is about 250 years old. The Shivalinga of Lord Shiva installed in the temple was found in ancient times during excavation. There is a belief among the devotees that at the place where the temple is situated at present, there was a dense forest in ancient times. A cow used to come here and drop her milk every day. Due to this, excavation was done at this place, in which Shivalinga was found. Since then it started being worshiped in the name of Vankhandeshwar Baba. Devotee Vimal Tiwari tells that Vankhandeshwar temple is the only Mahadev temple in the city where there are gates around the Shivalinga room. Due to this, during the Aarti, devotees have darshan of Mahadev from every door.
Specialty of the temple: Mahadev and his family are present in the ancient temple. Statues of Lord Hanuman, the trouble-shooter, and many gods and goddesses including Shri Krishna are installed in the temple. Devotee Sachivendra Singh Sengar told that the clothes of the Lord are changed three times in the temple. The fierce form of Mahadev is seen during the day. Whereas after the Shayan Aarti, Mahadev takes a humble form.
Devotees from all over the city and country come to see Mahadev. During the month of Shravan, the atmosphere of the temple drenches everyone with devotion. By having darshan of Mahadev with true heart, every wish of the devotees is fulfilled.
Every day a large number of devotees come to the temple for the Jalabhishek of Mahadev. A fair is organized in the temple premises during the month of Shravan. Offering Bel leaves and Ganga water to Mahadev in the holy month of Shravan brings prosperity. – Ramnaresh, temple priest.
