It is included in the oldest and most famous temples of the country, in fact, in this temple, twelve real sisters are revered as idols of the goddess with the power of their penance.

About the temple:
Bhakton Bara Devi Temple is located at Bara Road, Juhi Kalan, Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. This temple is one of the most famous and oldest temples in the country. There are idols of 12 goddesses in this temple. Most of the areas of South Kanpur like Barra 01, Barra 02, Barra 03, Barra 04, Barra 05, Barra 06, Barra 07, Barra 08, Barra 09, Bingawan, Barasirohi etc. are known by the name of Bara Devi. Lakhs of people living in Kanpur and surrounding districts have deep faith in Bara Devi. There is a crowd of devotees here all twelve months of the year. During Navratri days, a fair of lakhs of devotees is organized here.

History of the temple:
Devotees, neither does anyone know the exact history of Bara Devi Temple of Kanpur nor does anyone know when and by whom this temple was constructed, ASI team had surveyed this temple in which it was found that Bara This temple of the goddess is more than 1700 years old.

Folktale:
There is a very famous folk tale related to the devotees of Bara Devi Temple, according to which a father had 12 daughters. He had a disagreement with his father over some issue. He began to fear his father’s anger. Therefore, to escape the wrath of their father, the twelve (12) sisters ran away from home together. After running away and reaching here, the twelve sisters started doing penance here. While doing penance, the twelve sisters were established as idols. These 12 sisters who became idols later became famous by the name of Kalantar Baradevi. It is said that due to the curse of his daughters, their father had also turned to stone.

Market outside the temple:
Devotees have a market outside the Bara Devi temple in which there are shops selling flower garlands, coconut chunari, dry fruits, sweets, puja materials, pictures of deities, rosaries, lockets of Maa Bara Devi etc. Devotees who come to visit Bara Devi buy necessary puja materials etc. from these shops.The route to the temple of Maa Bara Devi passes through this market.

Devotees throng Bara Devi Temple throughout the year to have darshan of Mata. People of all castes and religions come to this temple to offer prayers. Here the mantras of the Goddess are chanted day and night. This temple and its environment is a great place for devotees to find happiness, peace and health.

Celebrations and festivals:
Devotees, all the festivals are celebrated with great devotion and joy in Bara Devi Temple. But during the festivals of Navratri and Durga Puja, devotees have special interest towards this temple. Because the special worship and decoration done during Navratri leaves the devotees mesmerized. The spiritual atmosphere of this temple provides peace to the heart and mind of the devotees. On the Ashtami Tithi of Navratri, devotees take out the Jawara of Maa Bara Devi. There is a flood of faith around the temple.

Main entrance of the temple:
The idols of Lord Lakshminarayan ji, Maa Mahishasura Mardini and Shri Shiva Parvati ji are installed at the main entrance of the devotees’ Bar Devi temple. Devotees who come to see Bar Devi enter the temple after seeing these idols.

Temple Opening Timings:
The opening time of Kanpur Bara Devi Temple for devotees is fixed from 6 am to 8 pm. Therefore, when you go to visit here, keep in mind the time.

Aarti Timings:
Devotees perform Aarti twice a day in Kanpur Bara Devi Temple. The time of the first Aarti is at 7 am and the time of the second Aarti is at 7 pm. The atmosphere of Aarti with the sound of drums and conch shells provides joy to the devotees.

Chunari Bandhan for the happiness of children:
Devotees believe about Bara Temple of Kanpur that whatever childless couple comes to this temple at the request of Mother Goddess and with the wish of happiness of children, ties a Chunari in the temple to fulfill their wish, then by the grace of Mother Bara Devi, their courtyard will be blessed. The echo of the child’s screams can definitely be heard. People who are blessed with a child by the grace of Goddess Bara Devi, get their child shaved on the temple premises itself on the upcoming Navratri. After Mundan, the couple opens the chunari. This tradition has been going on for centuries.
