Lankeshwar Shiva Temple -Guwahati

Lankeshwar Temple is an ancient Shiva temple on top of a hillock in the western part of the Guwahati city near Guwahati University campus. The Lankeshwar Temple of Assam is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is placed atop a hill amidst a picturesque location. Lankeshwar is one of the many forms of Lord Shiva. The followers of Lord Shiva considered the temple as one of the most sacred one. Devotees all around the year visit this temple and seek divine blessings.

Lankeshwar is on the top of a hill and has about 450 steps. The climb is very beautiful and a temple of Shani (Saturn) is found on the way. A huge statue of a crow is placed on a pedestal at the entrance of Shani temple since crow is believed to be the vehicle of the planet Shani.

As per a legend, one of the forms of God Shiva is Lankeshwar. This temple is considered sacred by the devotees due to this reason and thousands of followers throughout the year visit to get God Shiva’s blessings. According to the stories of Hindu mythology, King Ravana of Lanka worshipped God Shiva at this very place. The region is known as Lankeshwar due to this reason. The temple building contains engravings about religious significance. The temple was constructed by the King of Guwahati several years ago. Most of the devotees visit this temple for the sacred blessings of the God and it is believed that all sins of a person are removed once they step into the temple.

The festival of Maha Shivaratri is celebrated with great joy at the temple. The devotees from all over the country visit for the sacred Darshan of God Shiva and his blessings.
