Lete Hunaman (Shri Patali Hanuman Mandir) Khandwa
Khandwa, Omkareshwar. The idol of Hanuman (Patal Hanuman) lying on the circumambulation path in Tirthanagari is the center of mythological beliefs as well as faith. Located about seven feet below the ground, this huge 20 feet statue has the goddess of Hades buried under its left foot and Ahiravana buried under its right foot. Ramji and Lakshman are adorned on the right shoulder and a mace is adorned on the left shoulder. It is said that when Ahiravan had abducted Lord Ram and Lakshman and took them to the underworld, then Hanuman ji freed them from Ahiravan and while returning, lay down on Omkar mountain for rest. For this reason, a temple of lying Hanuman has been built here. It is about 600 years old.
Late Hanuman Temple is also called Patal Hanuman Temple. It is situated near Gauri Somnath Temple on Omkar Mountain. The idol of Hanuman located here is unique. Hanuman ji is seated here in a state of rest. A huge mace is also kept near Hanuman ji. There is a belief about this strange south facing idol that the journey of those doing Narmada Parikrama is not considered complete without having darshan here. Apart from Omkareshwar, such a big statue of Hanuman lying down in the country is also in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.
