Lord Ganesha’s right-sided trunk or left-sided trunk

Share

Often, before bringing home an idol of Lord Ganesha or installing it, the question arises: which way should His trunk be turned?

Have you ever noticed that in images and idols of Lord Ganesha, His trunk is sometimes depicted curving to the right and at other times to the left? Idols featuring a straight trunk are rare. It is precisely because of this curved trunk that Lord Ganesha is known as ‘Vakratunda’.

There are various forms of Lord Ganesha’s *Vakratunda* (curved-trunk) aspect. In some idols, Ganesha’s trunk is depicted curving to the left, while in others, it curves to the right. Generally, Ganesha idols feature a trunk that is straight or turned towards the north. It is believed that whenever an idol of Ganesha is crafted with the trunk turned towards the south, it tends to break. However, it is said that if one happens to find a *Dakshinavarti* (right-trunked) idol and worships it according to the prescribed rituals, one attains the desired results. The left trunk of Ganpati is believed to be influenced by the Moon, while the right trunk is associated with the influence of the Sun.

Lord Ganesha’s trunk is typically depicted curving in one of three directions. A trunk curved towards the right is associated with the *Pingala Nadi* and the energy of the Sun. Worshipping such an idol is considered auspicious for tasks involving the removal of obstacles, the defeat of enemies, achieving victory, and undertakings requiring intensity or a display of power.
Conversely, an idol with the trunk curved towards the left is associated with the *Ida Nadi* and the energy of the Moon. Worshipping such an idol is considered beneficial for long-term or enduring pursuits, such as education, the acquisition of wealth, business, professional advancement, the joy of progeny, marriage, creative endeavors, and family well-being.

An idol with a straight trunk is associated with the *Sushumna* energy channel, and worshipping it is considered supreme for attaining *Riddhi-Siddhi* (prosperity and spiritual success), *Kundalini* awakening, *Moksha* (liberation), and *Samadhi* (deep meditative absorption). The community of saints worships precisely this type of idol. The Siddhi Vinayak Temple houses an idol with a trunk curving to the right; this is why the temple currently enjoys such immense reverence and generates such high revenue.

Some scholars believe that Lord Ganesha with a trunk turned to the right is auspicious, while others hold that the one with a trunk turned to the left bestows auspicious results. However, some scholars attribute distinct significance to both forms.

If you wish to install an idol of Lord Ganesha in your home, an idol with a trunk curved towards the right is considered auspicious. Such an idol is known as ‘Siddhivinayak’. It is believed that beholding this form ensures the successful completion of any task. Catching a glimpse of this idol before setting out for a specific task leads to success and brings auspicious results. It also fosters positive energy in the home and eliminates Vastu defects.

Placing an idol or picture of Lord Ganesha at the main entrance of the house is considered auspicious. One should install an idol of Ganesha with his trunk curved towards the left; such a form of Ganesha is known as the ‘Vighnavinashak’ (Destroyer of Obstacles). The rationale behind placing this form at the main entrance is that when we step out, we may inadvertently bring back various forms of misfortune, calamities, or negative energy. When we catch a glimpse of Lord Ganesha—the remover of obstacles—before entering the house, the resulting influence halts all negative energy right there, preventing it from entering the home along with us.
